  • It's a big, expensive if.

  • Completely agree, and it's unproven. But I for one am glad they're trying.

  • how is pf30 doing for sram when they got rid of those pesky threaded cups and relied on frame manafacturer tolerances eh?

  • Not sure tbh. But I'm not seeing a link between a response to BB30 and a completely new* approach to rear mechs?

Unless the suggestion is that one idea didn't pan out, so pessimism for anything else they try?

*I'm assuming, I don't remember seeing something like this before.

  • I've broken a couple of hangers by getting a stick or something caught between the chain and the lower pulley wheel. I wonder what will happen with these, looks like the cage is supposed to give and it seems to be easy to replace.

  • I think the point is that "here's our version of something that can work (ignore big if)" manufacturers do it, but cheap out a bit and don't do it perfectly (big if is still ignored, despite being a feature rather than a problem), things start breaking because they weren't manufactured to tolerances, also someone makes a new one that's almost the same but they've solved the problem with frames and mechs breaking all the time by adding a small, sacrificial bit of metal that will bend or break instead of the frame or mech if hit hard enough to damage either in a lot of situations, only $90 from wolftooth.

  • And it's SRAM, it'll break anyway.

  • Or, it works well, is robust and influnces future development of their cheaper rear mechs to alleviate problems for regular users who's bikes come specced with SRAM. We've already seen the wide range eagle stuff trickle down to cheaper group sets making better MTB bikes for people not interested in the expensive eagle stuff and expensive bikes. (E.g NX etc).

It's not always rainy in Philadelphia.

  • The SRAM break thing was mildly tongue in cheek. The NX stuff is actual shit though, so much play in brand new mechs they don't shift properly on far too many. I'm not a retro grouch by any means and I'm not against new shit, I generally love it, but this seems like an actually bad idea. Obviously I've never seen it and am happy to be proved wrong but if the trickle down bits that people want are no limit screws in exchange for redesigns of most bikes going forward and not having a sacrificial part of the bike as part of one of the most easily damaged areas of the bike it seems a bit daft.

  • I like this. That crankset is one of my favorites ever. For aesthetics alone.

  • I can't wait to see what the big box frame makers make of this new SRAM system. It opens them up to a world of potential warranty claims that were previously covered by said £10 piece of replaceable mild steel.

  • SRAM are the second (?) Largest component maker going, and they've been developing it for 8 years (apparently). It's hard to imagine that they weren't consulting with mainstream manufacturers.

In fact on the compatibiltiy page, there are bikes from trek, canyon, giant etc.

I don't think the warranty for frames thing is an issue. The force required to break a frame from a mech hit is surely going to just snap a mech hanger (which is weaker than a frame), thus sending the mech into that wheel or frame causing havoc. The idea behind it being that it's much stronger and less likely to have any issues.

Of course this is just the idea, and as Otter says, it could be a disaster, but they are a pretty large engineering company that generally knows what it's doing.

  • I hope it got replaceable parts. Fuck companies that make expensive shit that's not user serviceable and refundable. Oh, you broke the jockey wheel holder, whole new derailleur for you.

  • According to the blurb it's rebuildable and has interchangeable parts and 'skid plates' (which I assume are just protective parts)

Being able to rebuild your Eagle Transmission derailleur beyond the skid plate is also a reality. If needed, you can swap Full Mount, Inline Cage, Magic Wheel and more.

  • I did just have a look at the manual online but it might be that there is a non idiot customer service manual that's not online. We will see.

Fuck spending 700 on that if you can't fully rebuild it. Like that stupid power meter.

  • I am not a fan of the direct mount stuff either, but as I understand, the potential load of a fall would be taken by the thru axle mostly, not the stays of the frame.

  • This is ultimately what dissuaded me from making the move to electronic shifting

Oh, you broke the jockey wheel holder, whole new derailleur for you

  • It may have been mentioned and I have not researched it, But what's the compatibility like with frames??

I'm assuming it cant work with every frame? only TA boost frames with specific designed DO's?

  • shopping arround you could get 15 m6100's for the price of one of these new sram beep boops, plus you'd get the reliable, crisp and servicable shimano quality

  • this sram stuff is just milking the cow.... everyone can c it jesus cxrist!
hope the stock of downtube shifters and 6/7/8/9/10 speed shimano cassettes and all that stuff remains high!

  • Only frames with SRAM UDH dropouts.

  • Is there some confusion that this is a new mainstream everyday product release for people heading to swinners?

It's quite clearly a top end 'Hero' product release, that'll probably be refined and filtered down to cheaper sets in the future, like all drivetrain innovation ever (clutches, electric shifting, larger cassettes etc etc etc)

I might be wrong, but I don't think anyones being forced to buy it instead of their 9 speed microshift system.

  • You seem to be defending this on every thread that's debating it. Which is fair.

It's innovative and does look cool. Like you said, it's not for us meer consumers, it's for the pros and high tech buyers!

  • You seem to be defending this on every thread that's debating it.

Just this one I think? Sorry yes defending it just from what I thought was unfair criticism, for what is a new high end tech piece.

I'm not going to buy it, it's way to expensive for me, but I like it from a technical point, and the engineering aspect, and what it's trying to achieve. It's good to be bold and try new ideas or things just stagnate and it's not helpful to just say it's really expensive and issues that clearly have gone into the engineering, and been addressed in their documentation quite well.

Fwiw I'm riding Advent X, which I think I can buy four or five full sets of for the rear mech alone, and I think is great. Full of trickle down tech.
