  • When you tell Geoff Roberts this, can you film his reaction

  • Ooo! Might have to buy a garmin just for that 😆

  • TBH, I think I broke him with BB#4. T47 BB, tapered headtube, monohoop T45 chainstays, internal Di2 wiring, internal hydraulic hoses, and all internal dynamo light wiring. I think he already considers me a lost cause.

Which is ironic, as the next frame I'm planning to make at his place is a skinny-tubed lugged frame with a horizontal top tube. Albeit with rocker dropouts.

  • I already maxed out the Kinesis with skinny bars + aerobars w/ 50mm GKs. Where do I get one of these fatbikes? They sound like they're designed specifically for me. :)

  • I've been looking at pipe dream Alice, velo orange piolet, Darwin light blue Mt.

  • pipe dream Alice

Is it just me or does everyone else have no fucking idea who half these manufacturers are these days? Every day I see a new bike brand.

EDIT: Been around at least 6 years but they seem to be MTB/Enduro focused. That's why I've never heard of 'em.

  • I got my pipedream in 2005...

(doesn't look like that any more - now it's got a ti fork and a fat front wheel)

  • Maybe I’ll do this to my 29er

  • shimano synchro shift. What's next? Totally automatic changes with the system reading the cadence?

  • I assume so, I remember reading an article when they brought it out for XTR di2 that full auto was the next logical jump.

  • Just cadence won't be enough though, it'll need power input to understand how much "you're giving" to work out whether you want to keep jamming at that cadence or need an upshift.

  • Could be cheaper to use elevation and road speed combined with map based grade and surface type to predict how you're riding

  • Could be cheaper to drive

  • On that note, drivers eschewed automatic gearboxes for years and still do, but modern autos are 10x better than most humans. It'll take some time to get to that point but I don't see why bikes won't get there.

You'll have enthusiasts who bemoan the loss of manual shifting, and choose it over auto, even though on their club rides or regular route they could be quicker with auto shifting.

  • Wouldn't the motoring equivalent of an automatic bicycle transmission be CVT? Not many drivers choosing those.

  • Maybe, it's a bit more complex, I'd say a hybrid of the two. Kind of depends on your riding style I'd say.

If from a standing start you accelerate to say 90 RPM then maintain that cadence and just keep clicking up gears and as you keep going up gears you just add more power to keep going at 90 RPM then I'd say yes. A bike does not have a continuously variable transmission though, but given that it has a lot of gears, it's close to that concept.

Interestingly, a few notable engineers have proven that CVTs are the most efficient transmission for cars, they're just not popular, so car manufacturers don't use them because they're in the business of making cars people want to buy. However, you'll see that manufacturers keep adding gears, Mercedes now make a 9sp auto, compared to the 4sp they were still putting out only 20 years ago, the spread is only a little bit wider but the drop between each gear is much much shorter so it's trying to emulate CVT by having more gears. I wouldn't be surprised if within another 10 years we're seeing 11 or 12sp autos, making them no different to 1x11.

  • Apologies for the car based detour, I find the idea of automatic gears on bikes quite exciting and fascinating.

  • I think he's going down the gravel bike route instead now and will keep the hardtail how it's meant to be!

Thanks all for reining this one in!

  • The regular NuVinci hub is CVT, but it's not automatic.

  • If from a standing start you accelerate to say 90 RPM then maintain that cadence and just keep clicking up gears

The biggest issues is that you can’t exactly soft pedal through the gear changes, which can be quite violent if you change gears under torque.

  • Automatic gears... What's next? Self-riding bikes?!
