  • So, Campag Record brake levers are best then ;)

    Hen's teeth innit.

  • That has me thinking about looking for broken old silver campag levers to remove the shifter mechanism from.

  • Hen's teeth

Nah, just take any old broken ergos and tear out the shift bits.

Edit: these are old veloce ergos that I've gutted:

  • That’s exactly what I was looking out! Now to find some...

I have a pair of modern ones that I’ve used (couldn’t be bothered to gut) but looking for the nicer old shape now.

Edit: that All City is delightful.

  • I have a pair of black xenon shifters with the old shape you can have. I'm in Sweden though so postage might be expensive but I'll look into it if you like.

  • Thanks, but after ones with silver levers!

  • I did try them with mini vs. Had too much shudder and only just had mudguard clearance at the front. Deore V brakes worked much better..

  • I assume you are referring to the Decathlon bike. Don't you think there's a bit of Gravel Tax in it's pricing?

  • Do you prefer canti's over mini v's? Why?

I love canti because they feel great, but it may required careful set up if it's not great at first.

Mini v work brilliantly but can be very spongy, even with compressionless housing, I actually found the Tektro v brake levers actually made the brake feel sharper and didn't detect any loss of power (as you'd expect if you use MTB levers on road pull).

The mini-v does have problem with juddering, as well as high squealing, which I'm not entirely sure why that is the case, however Shimano Mini-V made a difference compare to the entry level Tektro Mini-V.

Dunno, £500 is pretty good for an entry level gravel bike that doesn't required expensive componentry to maintain (10 speed stuff can be found cheap as chip, especially through Decathlon).

  • The SCR-5 are just rebaged Tektro R200s.

I’ve found all the Tektros to have a decent amount of play in the pivot and have preferred their nicer TRP levers. Trying to decide between the TRPs and Sram 500s on a bike now.

  • S500 the one to go (I chopped the left side for running fixed).

  • True Ed,
Considering getting one …. Decathlon bikes have hacking potential . Solid frames , reasonable parts, and the potential to alter or upgrade from your parts box.
The Riverside 900 is another bike with the potential to become something different

  • @Eeyorecore s500 if you can live with the hole where the shifter normally would be. really dont know why sram doesnt have a plastic cover or such thing to go over that. other than that very comfortable.

edit: for hollowing out campys you could watch out for cheap mirage shifters

Can't really find Tektro R200 online, unlike the Cane Creek SCR-5.

  • Is that your Stumpjumper? Looks good.

  • Wrong thread but the pinaccle experts are probably here...

Do I need to look further for a road+ bike? Will probably be used as a road bike/commuter type bike.

  • arkose is fine.

  • @si_mon628 thanks! unfortunately not my bike anymore. had to go to fund other shenanigans
can really recommend these frames for gravel style riding tho

  • Me, too. I was riding a 98 Rockhopper for gravely stuff before my Midnight Special I posted a few pages back. I rode the Spec for a tour around the Ardennes last year. It was perfect.

It wasn’t so good on more roady stuff, so I built the Surly.

NB I am replacing the steerer extender with a VO gooseneck Cigne stem soon.

  • oookay, specialized seriously wants to send me a full carbon sequoia from 2015 as a replacement for my full steel bike. and i need to send them a proof that i saw thru my old frame in order to send the new one... don´t really know what i should do now

  • send a pic of the frame - i'll photoshop it in half!

  • Well, if you do, I'll still take it in 2 halves :D
Just don't cut through the seat tube and cut the down/top tubes close to a joint, not the middle

  • if i don´t get any other offer, thats what i have planned to do.

@PhilDAS they want me to cut it at the bottom bracket near the frame number
