  • The seatpost has to go, totally agree on that.
I like the stem too, because it came with the framset, but its just so long. Well I'll ride it for a while and see how I like it.

It is already way more comfy than my mielec.

Rattlecanning the forks could be an option. But I'd rather have new forks, these are a little bit shit. The canti studs are about 2mm different in height, making the v-brake setup really awkward.

  • I ride the same seatpost at the moment, and it's not ideal, but it works sort of okay with a silver stem. Might be an option..

  • Perhaps flat bars would improve the appearance.

  • What wheels did you go for in the end?

  • Some cheap ebay job. They spin and work well.

On Topic: The seatpost has failed me, so this is standing around unused until I can get some cash together for a new post. Meh.

  • cheers, looks amazing. Currently have an eye on ebay for something similar myself! Need something with big tyres and great practicality for winter...

  • Keep the stem. Put on some drops or upturned north road bars.

  • I might have one you can have for nowt. Need to check if it's 26.0 or 26.2

  • What it really need is bullmoose bar.

  • That would be awfully nice. Although I'm in Germany so shipping would be a little impractical? I'd pay of course.

@tallsam problem is: it's nearly too long for me as it is now. drops would make it definitely too long.

@edscoble yes. Indeed. Where can I get one of these, and how much dollabills is it?

  • so many dollarbills.
    i so badly want some.

  • Very early 90s and late 80s mtb had those style bars. Surely they'll come up on ebay.

  • rare and pricey

  • Talk to Ted

  • Really? Maybe its just the rarity because they used to come on some really shit cheap bikes (my mate's Emmelle had some on and that thing was terrible).

I know they came on nicer bikes too.

  • obvs.
    hence pricey

  • Many apologies for the dredge, but this is almost exactly what I'm currently up to. Identical frame, but in worse condition :-) love the paintwork but I have a feeling I need to sand back and find an obnoxious rattle can colour for it.

How you getting on with the bike? You finding that rear brake ok? I wondered why it couldn't be replaced with a v or cantis. How did you find the internal routing - mines got an outer stuck in the front exit and I wanted to get some previous experience before just yanking it out and leaving myself with nothing to re-route with!

  • I'm getting on great with the bike. As summer came I have got this one out of the cellar for "sunshine bike" duties.
Works a charm as a beater, kojaks and a well lubed chain make it a stealth bike.

The rear brake is noticeably weaker than the front V-Brake, it does its job though. A hard pull of the lever will lock the rear wheel up, so it's okay. I much prefer the front brake anyway.

Sadly you can't swap for a canti/v-Brake since the brake studs for the U-Brake are mounted higher, over the brake track, as opposed to under the brake track for V-Brakes.

The internal routing works pretty well. It is a metal tube routed through the top-tube, wider than an outer cable, so you can just stick a complete outer cable through there until the rear exit, which acts as a cable stop.

No problems with sealing - full outer cable.

I'd try removing the stuck outer and check what's making it stuck inside. Rust maybe? Then clean that out and stick a new outer in.

  • Ah, good to hear it's still doing the business! I just had a bit of a mess around with mine while the toddler's having a nap. Managed to strip the frame down and have cleaned it up and inspected it a bit more. I gave the cable a good yank and managed to get it out - you're right it was rusted in, but it looks like the liner is intact so i'll spray liberally with GT86 and hope for the best! The frame has a fair few patches of rust so i started sanding it back with a view to rattle-canning. Such a shame to ditch that nice splatter paintwork!

You've got it set up single speed, right? Looks like mine will be a 1x8 as it will occasionally carry my daughter too.

    Cheers!

  • Yeah, mine is set up single speed. 1x gearing should work fine. Cheap shimano QRs seem to hold the rear wheel tight without any tensioners. Nice.
