Going hydraulic will help with maintenance during the season, it'll reduce the constant ache of adjusting the pads.
If it's for racing, I'm not sure going expensive is the best route. I'm sure you've seen how many people snap mechs and after 1 lap in the heavy stuff pretty much all drivetrains are reduced to 'only just working' condition. You could spend the extra cash on a pressure washer and waffles.
Good luck with the build, nice frame!

You could spend the extra cash on beer and waffles.

tbh - that is the way I am inclined to go initially.
I know all about breaking stuff (including rear mechs in the first 100 meters) - managed less than 50% finishes last year..., which was a large part in looking for a frame with better mud clearance/discs/

Got the seized bearings out, need to get some rotor 4130 ones now.

I went for (and bear in mind that I love Di2) R-685 and Ultegra 6800 mechs due to watching a race at Herne Hill that seemed to have 50% of the racers coming back with no rear mech.
I can replace a lot of 6800 mechs for the cost of one 6870...

Yeah, will think about it again when di2 mechs can be had for <<£100

Pretty settled on 1x11 5800 groupset with TRP spyres
Wheels will be Mavic Crossones and will build up a set of tubs for muddy racing later in the year - possibly using some of these 29er 30mm wider carbon tub rims:

if my LBS can get hold of them I am going to try these Juin Tech R1 hybrid calipers:

ride this brake on my slr2, great brake, but only allowed for cx/city, no alpine downhill rides
-
• #11
Id be interested to know how they compare to the TRP HYRD
-
• #12
Better clearance and lighter apparently - but I don't think they self adjust for pad wear (which I can live with)
Braking performance is similar from what I gather. -

i had problems with the combination of sram and hy/rd and therefore switched to the r1
-
• #14
Thanks - that's interesting - what were the issues you had?
Is the advice about not using them for alpine descents from the manufacturer or your experience?
I will be running Shimano 5800 levers -
• #15
the main problem was that i couldn't adjust the cable pull, which means the lever was at the handlebar but if didn't felt like 100% braking power at all.
it changed with the r1.now i'm riding full hydro disc brakes.
advice is given by propably the biggest and oldest cyclocross store in germany, they are selling their own r1 version (with their own label and in different colors).

So... bottom brackets.
Planning on running my rotor 3d+ crankset on this - which requires a bb86 - 30mm bb.
Do I go for the rotor4130 one - or perhaps the raceface bb92 cinch one (as its cheaper and bb92 is the same cup size) or something else? Enduro?@andyp - don't you run rotor3d+ on a TCX? - what BB do you use?
-
• #17
I'm running Rotor 3d cranks, so with 24mm axle rather than 30 mm. I'm using a KCNC press fit BB.
-
• #18
Thanks, will just pick one of the 4130 BBS and try it then.

That's what I was going to use with the 3DFs I was planning to use before it became apparent my plan to swap my P2M between the road bike and the cross bike was a non-starter.

Wheels and brakes picked up.
bb should be here in the next few days, then I need to get some cables to swap my groupset over.
Do people run full length outers? It seems the frame is designed with that in mind...

Coming along. Bb arrived, as did the narrow wide chainring. Realised I don't have any single ring chainring bolts though....
Still need to pick up some cables too. Thinking transfil flying snake.

Can we see this thing built soon...?
Picked up one of these framesets super cheap as it has a small dent in one of the seatstays:
Been after one for a while due to the mud clearance - races in the South West tend to be VERY muddy...
Will be replacing my Ti Van Tuyl CX bike for CX racing duties.
Debating what to put on it..
I will be running 1x11 but do I just go cheapy and a 105 set with cable discs - or go for ST r685 hydraulics - or even r785 and ultegra Di2 ?
Wheels will probably be a set of Mavic 29er - as they come in 15mm thru axle and are 11speed.
Will likely pick up a set of chinese carbon tubs for racing on later in the year.
