  • Looks decent and I can understand the QR choice, but it looks as if it has IS mounts which I am less sure about. OK if you want BB7s I guess.

  • My guess is they're thinking they'll sell a lot more of the flat bar version, so people will upgrade to MTB hydraulics etc rather than flat mount.

  • Got bored and rejigged my lht with a stridsland fork, also took a punt on the aliexpress Paul levers, let’s see how they fare.

  • I feel the same tbqh. End of the cross check is definitely the end of an era. Steamroller still rim brake for now though obvs.

But then I also remember that discs are great (which is why everyone wants them) and perhaps I really should learn how to work on hydraulics? Maybe now is the time.

But yes, I do miss my pack rat.

  • I personally think Surly still work on the assumption that people that ride bikes buy their products. And in the US their frame sets aren’t out for the way in price. So buy a Preamble or whatever style you like and transfer all the bits from that hybrid or MTB that you don’t ride anymore. What drops? Get some (god forbid) corner bars or maybe some bar end shifters and away you go. You can upgrade later if you like. It’s a sound business model if they can keep being fresh, but at the same time keeping one foot in the past.
It works for me, it’s just a shame UK prices aren’t so attractive anymore.

  • If the crosscheck had a problem it was that the geometry was too long and low
resulting in a huge spacer stack. It looks like surly have addressed this problem with the new frame. Is £1k a reasonable price for the flat barred commuter though? The Planet X Kaffenback, another cromoly frame, is much cheaper.

  • I’ve heard whispers that the Steamroller may be phased out soon.

  • No ferrule on the brake housing?

  • Huge if true! Haha I did think it was tempting fate to write that. For new frames, it makes sense really doesn't it. Rim brakes bikes will be like film cameras; you can have one, but it'll be a retro choice and you'll need to buy it second hand. In fact, wait a minute, if the explosion of film camera prices is anything to go by we need to all start hoarding rim brake kit, like, now.

  • Or just wait for "Big" bike to start flogging rim brake bikes again, it'll come back round.

  • Last week I crashed while on tour in Guatemala and bent the fork on my 8 year old Straggler.

Today - 9 days after emailing Surly - a free replacement arrived in Antigua with the steerer cut to length and a star nut installed. Big shout out to Surly customer service.

I know it’s not a huge deal for QBP/Surly and their CS and shipping departments but when I explained the same situation to Tubus they told me I was on my own and there was absolutely nothing they could do to help.

Tldr: Surly did a cool thing and really helped me out

  • Any one interested in some Surly Truck Stop bars in 45cm?
No longer required due to 64cm Dawes purchase!

  • Here’s my Cross-Check on dad duty this morning.

    Amen

  • Find a good deal on a frameset so I took the opportunity to replace my Cinelli Tutto Plus size 54 that was way too small, by a Straggler in 56.
In retrospect, I should have picked a frame with a longer headtube but i'll replace the bullmoose by a BMX handlebar and it should be fine :)

    Said every surly owner ever

  • Yeah, I got excited as I got a really good deal but already thinking of selling it after 2 rides

  • Sounds like you need a genesis croix de fer.

  • Is this not because their top tubes are too long? So it’s either a huge spacer stack or a chode seatpost and stem?? Personally I’d prefer the spacer stack. I sort of think it’s fine on steel frames.

Looking to buy an MS and at 5’10 I think I’m gonna go size 50 because they’re so flippin long. Next size is a 54 which is more like a 56.

  • Just rock a big spacer stack

  • A lot of the last 4/5 posts resonates with me. I feel pretty 'meh' about my Straggler after buying it a few years ago.

  • Already left 4cms while cutting the fork, anything more is unacceptable haha

  • I think we should start to embrace the high rise stem

  • I’m 5’12” and ride a 56 MS. I’ve gone stubby stem and shortish seat pin. Because it’s really just an old road bike with more clearance and old road bikes with flagpoles for seat pins look strange to me. Long pins are for sloping top tube compacts IMO
