  • Yes, looks very practical and comfortable. Are you running hub gears of some kind?

  • Hi there, I happen to have a (black) Cross Check myself and was hoping someone could help me.

The previous owner cut the fork as low as one could go and it's been a real issue for my neck/back area.

So my big question: is it safe to build the height up with spacers (assuming that's even possible...no experience with ahead parts)? Or would it be better for me to just buy a whole new fork?

  • If it’s been cut it sounds like it’s new fork time. You can only build up with spacers as high as the fork is cut to, if that makes sense.

Easier just to get a new one, go wild with spacers and then decide where to cut it. Sell the old forks to recoup some cost?

  • Hi and thanks for your quick help! You've just solved one of life's mysteries for me.

Must admit, I don't really understand the sense of the ahead system. It's seems so unsustainable. But perhaps I am missing something. Anyway, like you said, perhaps I can sell the old one.

    Thanks again!

  • I’m with you on that. It always seems like a lot of work to adjust bar height when quills were so simple.

I should have said, could you get around it by using a high rise stem like these?
    https://velo-orange.com/products/cigne-stem
    https://velo-orange.com/products/vo-happy-stem-31-8mm

They may not get you high enough, and are an aquired taste aesthetically, but thought I should mention them.

  • Thanks for that! I've tried another brand with a similar 'Happy Stem' look from VO. It felt somehow a bit nervous to me.

The Cigne stem appeared outlandish at first now, but the more I look at it, it be something to consider.

(I have actually been in two minds about keeping the bike though.)

  • yes, rohloff hub which makes it a bit OTT for a pottering about bike.

  • I had to pop to the LBS earlier to pick something up for Liz. When I got there she was there. Holding this for me. It’s my birthday at the end of the month so. One lucky fella.
I’ll take some better pics later.

  • Floating it on here first for fellow Surly lovers.

I've recently acquired @crow's lovely Pack Rat frame in order to replace a slightly too small Cross Check.

So, I'm looking to shift a size 54cm black Cross Check. 700c compatible and currently built up like this:

    Things I'll be parting with:

    Frame - 54cm black - £450 fair? It's a new frame from 2020
Wheels - need to double check the rear. The front is definitely a DT Swiss R460 with SP PV-8 dynamo hub. Rim brake, set up tubeless with Teravail Cannonball (700 x 42). £250 the set?
    Handlebars - Nitto Jitensha. £20
    Honjo - hammered, fluted mudguards (700 x 48). £80

Probably various other small bits like cranks, stem and seat post I could be persuaded to part with, but not anything from the drive train, brakes or saddle.

  • Loved it, until I saw the headtube, wtf, is that normal!

  • Surly's jig is still set up for their smaller head tubes I see.

  • With a normal head tube:

  • as far as i know, on the bigger frames sizes: yes.

  • the headtube is great, it's so fun

  • Anyone want a pair of SURLY midnight special forks? 270(maybe bigger) steere tube, straight as a straight thing and in good condition. 80posted?
