My quarter priced custom Mash Work aka "Why So Surly".
-
• #130
I do like that front end

what's that fork? disc mounts and rack supports brazed on a normal 'roller fork?

4season bike. Surly Pacer. Winter setup with stud tires. I hate my bike, doesnt give me any reason to ride my CX or road bike. I can do it with Surly, just swap the wheels for each ride.

My Karate Monkey. Modified it to have an extra down tube - chainstay cable run to keep the hub gear shifter nice and clean.

Exactly :)

nice, I love it

Grabbed some things form storage.
I was slowly gathering parts for Monk but redundency and stuff got in the way.
Got some enduro bearings to push into raceface cups for the cranks, got some proper 29er wheels, and picked up some MonoM4's just need to decide on what rotor size and get rotors and caliper mounts.
Might well run gears too, 1x9.

Found a clear corner to set the workstand up and hang the bike up.
The Hope brake levers won't fit the drop bars so back to flat bars.
The V-brakes will be coming off as the 29er wheels are disc only. It's an old friend slowly coming back to life, can't make this years MacAvalanche but maybe next year we can return to the Mac and slay it again :)
Be a while to bring back to life, got a hankering for a Steamroller now which is slowing things down :0

That will do for now.
Risers back on.
V-brakes off, also cracked the studs out (easier than expected).
Pumped the tyres up.
Toying with 180-180 rotors, but will most likely go with the 180-160, if i had some 200's handy i would fit for lols and see if the rear would fit.
Cleaned the v-brakes and studs and put away together.
Need to rummage through caliper mounts and most likely buy new mounts and discs.
But next main job is to fit the enduro bearing kit into the knackered raceface BB, can't do much until i fit the cranks.
Might just fully strip the frame down and clean and weigh stuff, bit of weight weenie action with a Surly :)

Well.
After coming close to saying fuck it and running mullet brake set up. Had another rummage and play around with caliper brackets.
Need a new mount to run a 160mm rear rotor. But it seems happy with 180 now. Doubled checked and upto 200mm rotors is fine. So Monks going 180-180. Just need some new rotors and deep clean on the calipers and levers.
And i need to recover my BB spanner from whom i lent it too........ weeks ago.....
Getting somewhere at last. May vist halfrauds and see if they have any offers on discs.

Couldn't get the chain quick link off so cut that off.
Frames had a good clean and check over now, as the asshat i stupidly lent my BB spanner too has gone quiet...... so i can't refit the BB yet......... so i got the scales out instead :)
Weight Weenies look away.
Diacompe CB2 headset 106g (claimed weight) weighed bits to guess weight of cups in frame.
Surly cast stainless steel seat post clamp 40g
V-brake studs x4 40g
Fork 1098g
18" Frame 2440gSo thats around 7.7lb for frame and fork, can't say i have ever really noticed the weight and it rides it well.
Might have to weigh the old wheels against the new ones now and everything else, i am sure the deore cranks i got are a fair bit lighter than the Truvativ Hussfelts i was using, the wheels should be lighter, but adding 1x9 gears and disc brakes so weights just moving around, not that you buy a Surly if you have weight worries anyway :) -

Frame stripped out and cleaned and retreated inside of tubes.
Ready to rebuild almost......
Need to rebuild the BB next, re-fit headset and fork, caliper mounts, build up a cassette, got an XT one somewhere.
Needed a new 9spd shifter, after looking around i ended up with CRC for 180mm rotors, shifter, deore rear mechs are fairly cheap so why not, Monk was going to get the old Tiagra mech, couple of chains and some continental inner tubes.
See if the £4.99 next day service option works with CRC.
Might have Monk rolling by Thursday night, just in time for the bank holiday weekend, which i have 4x13hour shifts to do so no riding just yet, but hopefully ready for action again soon :)

@853Superfly you could set up a current projects thread?
-
• #144
Toyed with a current projects, if i go Steamroller then yes, for now just going to spam this dark corner of LFGSS.
Been busy doing forum favorite things.
1)making a list (weighing stuff)
2)getting drunk
3)seeing how much shiny stuff i have lurking around to throw at Lazarus Monk
4)buying stuff for project Lazarus Monk (neat title if i went to a solo current projects thread)Rather happy, red wine, classic rock on the radio, just had Dio with Neon Nights blaring out, tea bubbling away in the slow cooker, may have pushed the new Enduro bearings without fucking them up, things are looking ok :)

Home made bearing press, only needed lump hammer once for a minor correction, may or may not have fucked a bearing.
Previous experience with Enduro bearing kits has been excellent, worth finding a shagged raceface or shimano external BB to modify and smack the seized bearings out of to fit an Enduro set, Race face cups tend to have deeper insertition than shimano so i prefer raceface (original bearings are shite though)

Seatpost action.
Monk takes a 27.2, the Roox is a 27.2 and isn't much heavier than the Thomson 25.4. My other 27.2 post is tied up in the Superfly853 frame, which is shimmed down from 29.4, try finding a 29.4 at a race when you bend a post, shimming down to 27.2 made practical sense.Ok why is Monk running a 25.4 then ? practical reasons. I found out the hard way that the kinked seat tube of a Karate Monkey will limit extreme seat post elevation changes, this is not good when on top of a mountain and you really really need to drop another inch, with careful cutting and shimming down the smaller diameter has covered me, no real weight savings, maybe some marginal comfort gains.
The saddle has been soaked and deep cleaned, a bit crusty, and the post was encrusted with dirt and stuff, the rail clamp bolts where tight to undo due to encrusted dirt. both have cleaned up nicely.
For now the weighty Surly stainless steel clamp is staying, it's bombproof and i know from practical experience seat clamps with out sticky out bits (quick release lever) is one less thing to impale your leg on when you have a spectacular high speed cartwheel event and crash.Fork installed along with headset bearings. Cranks ready to fit and running a 32t E13 ring and lightweight Gamut bashring, super duty options are ready in more gravity only flavour of 34t and 36t.
Cassette fitted running 11-34t XT 9spd, i have the option of adding a 24t or 26t inner chainring and front mech if need be.
I await the package from CRC to continue.

Tracking tells me my parcel is within 4 miles of me now and awaiting final delivery :)
Postie tends to come round between 10-12am.
Haven't ordered bike stuff for years, bit excited even if it's only low end gear, it's still gear that will make Monk ride again.
Best get tinkering away again, get the tyres mounted, sort out bars and stem, saddle and post while i wait.

Ordered about 22 hours ago.....now stuff is here :)
Worth the £5 priorty fee i think.I was mid talcing the tyres when postie turned up.
Does anyone else still do this ? add talcum powder to the tyres before fitting tubes, bit old school racing tip, the talc stops the inner sticking to the tyre and lets it move slightly, supposed to help reduce pinch flats and make the tyre feel more supple than it is so supposed to be a marginal gain in grip too, could be mechanics twaddle to pacify highly strung racers, seems to work.
Anyway.
Fitting time after i weigh everything :)

I think Tester may approve, or maybe a bit OTT even for him :)
Gone through the old stash of pads, the joy of now having 2 bikes on M4 calipers is i only need one size of pad now.
Always keep the bits, can be handy.
Paired up and size matched sets, when racing it's better to drop a fresh set in and quickly bed them in (or have them pre-bedded in) than chance it and lose a brake mid race.....chew up a disc etc etc.
I can start using up the part worn pads and look around for new ones later.
Front brake needs the hose trimming at the cylinder due to hose damage, rear brake has a lot of lever pull so maybe needs a bleed, the deep clean has free'ed up the lever return stroke loads, both could do with new hose really, either go standard plastic or check out how much braided kits are now.
The Shimano 180 rotors seem allright, just need bedding in, might smear with mud and quickly bed them in.

First outing of the new crosscheck. Love it already. Although getting pasela's onto a pacenti rim was an hour each, so dreading if I get a flat!
Excuse the crappy pictures and terrible bike positioning.
