  • I haven't clogged a frame up around the brakes with wide stance cantilevers and a high straddle, it's always around the bottom bracket junction for me.

I've never actually tried drop bar hydraulic brakes, just had bad experiences with bb7's, so I'm not dead against them. The hydraulic brakes on my mountain bike are great, so despite my previous statement I would consider them. It'd just mean two new wheel sets as well as a discs and a custom frame. Not going to happen anytime soon anyway.

  • Road BB7 are, in my experience, fit only for the bin.

  • They probably wouldn't stop in there.

  • After last season I'm gonna say Jon knows what he wants!

The new bike sounds cool Howard

  • Press-fit 30 bottom bracket is taking the place of BSA.

I assumed to run SRAM chainset? why not BB86 or something similar?

edit - you got sexy 30mm cranks, got it.

BB7 are general excellent, problem is merely setting up and cable housing.

hydraulic are a world of their own.

  • Subbed!

  • You've probably got it there, I didn't spend much time or money on cables and gave up on them pretty quickly. It seemed I was constantly adjusting for pad wear and they never really stopped me much quicker than well-setup cantilevers.

I reckon the big advantage with discs on cyclocross bikes comes outside of racing, I could have done with a pair when riding the south downs way: steep, loose descents with gates at the bottom are not ideal for cantilevers.

  • 2.1 is going to be a bit of a different animal. The trad geo is out

Curious about this. Got any drawings yet?

  • Semi-compact design with a sloping top-tube I believe.

Update - Matt has acquired some supplies with which to make sparkly paint, whilst I have ordered some hubs. In orange.

  • Sparkles!!

  • Is it for cross or poncing?

  • Is it for cross or poncing?

    Yes.

In other news, is it me or are the options for ten speed hydraulics pretty few and far between, whilst also being crushingly wallet emptying?

  • I thought you CX'ers avoided fanceh breakable bits?

  • In general, yeah. Was seeing there was a moderately inexpensive route in to hyrdaulics, just out of interest / learning. I don't think there is though. The SRAM S700 ten speed system seems to cost about £250 per wheel.

A cursory google makes it look like Shimano don't do a ten hydraulic set up.

  • Sub'd . Will try and pester you for a look once the season starts!

  • I like orange hubs. I've just not been brave enough to buy them myself... yet.

    Kings?

  • Couldn't you go for ultegra di2 and the HY/RD calipers?

  • No I could never justify that kind of spend on a hub. Just some SuperStar Components re-branded Novatecs.

@soul I thought about Di2 but the lack of a mech that works that little bit harder to hold the chain on puts me off. Also isn't it pretty much limited to eleven speed now? I'm reluctant to go eleven because I have a lot of ten speed cassettes and a lot of freehubs that won't take eleven speed.

  • Nice. I hadn't seen they did orange, as they don't offer it in road hubs.

I would be interested to know your thoughts on the hub quality, as I have been mulling over getting a wheelset from them.

  • Well on the assumption that they are all Novatecs then they will be good enough. Only problem I've encountered is some of the fronts use rare and therefore pricey bearings.

I just went for these [rear], [front], which looks like it works out cheaper than ordering from Bdop. I think. Shrug.

  • I reckon the Hardinge could 11-ise those free hubs.

  • Yeah probably could. Can't 11-ise four PG1070 11-36 cassettes tho :(
