  • Just to alleviate your pain, my ti disc bike weighs about 14kg without a rack and I cry every night as to how fucking heavy it is

  • How!?
Please share a picture / build list.
If I spot that your tyres weigh a kilo each then I have no sympathy ;) haha

  • At the top of my head - note the that 14kg was with hypers - I have now gone back to the 1kg or whatever m+

    1. burls ti with a similar geo to a condor fratello
    2. ultegra groupset except for the Hy rd brakes
3 Hope hubs on mavic 719 rims
    3. xt front dynamo
    4. deda stem, genesis bars and a smp saddle
    5. carradice sqr block and super C bag

will get a pic later I hope - edit got a rubbish pic on now

  • So I was doing my usual daily search for a 'disc brake road frame' and found that the London road frame is back in stock and only £199...

Is the genesis really worth £350 more...?

    http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FRPXLONROD/planet-x-london-road-frameset

  • Its cheap for a reason. Full rival 22 bike is 9.8kg.
    Steel is real ;)

  • Is the genesis really going to be twice as good? 9.8kg seems light enough to me, but then I dont have any carbon bikes.

  • Yeah I'm having a bit of a dilemma as always... The spare cash would buy a tonne of winter kit. The frame and fork are lighter than the genesis by about 500g I think. But it's not as nice... Ha

  • At the end of the day you just have to ask yourself .. will this ever be on tumblr?

  • This is probably the best argument against the Planet X. But it may also be the only argument against...
I need to go away again and decide if I want an attractive steel frame or a practical alloy frame. Heart vs head...

  • Planet x and spend the difference on a gabba!

  • I think it looks good in that colourway. As a matter of interest why not just get the steel kaffenback and a nice carbon fork, aesthetically its more in line with the cdf and potentially cheaper

  • As the owner of a genesis, and having ridden my share of alu frames, also having gone for the genesis over the arkose (same spec/~£500 cheaper) I would say it's worth the extra. Having just done 8-900 miles tour on the genesis, I can't fault it. Such a good bike.

Buying frameset you do get within striking distance of a Rychtarski custom build, which would be more desirable , and use fancier tubing, but I have no regrets about getting the genesis.

  • Yeah, I've never actually ridden steel, only alloy so it would be nice to have a fancy steel frame but then it is a year round commuter so doesn't need to be mega fancy... Again, it's the heart vs the head. Normally with me the head wins but I may make an acception for the genesis. Just want the damn thing to be released...

  • Yeah had seen this one and would have gone for it if it had mudguard mounts. I can live without rack mounts but guards are a prerequisite. Also the equilibrium will have an inboard rear disc caliper which is a nice touch and will make guard mounting a million times easier. But the fugio is super nice.

  • I know the whole point of the bike is winter bike, but these are a pretty good solution. I know I'd be tempted.

  • Stop messing about and get one of these framesets from China and build yourself a super commuter

  • Keep messing around! Don't buy the Chinese. What would we all do if you bought a frame? Keep pontificating, and by the time you're ready to buy, the genesis will be available.
    ;-)

  • If you are that keen on steel, whats wrong with the kaffenback at £149?

  • I just need you guys to keep posting once a week telling me to wait for the genesis.

In all honesty, I'm not waiting for steel. I'm waiting for aesthetics... Is that silly? I'm sure everyone does it. But I am having difficulty convincing myself that the genesis is £300 more attractive... Obviously the benefits of a fancy steel frame with decent features does come into it but it boils down to which looks nicer...

  • Bit late I know, but there's a thread on Bikeradar about the same thing (Canyon Inflite).

I've got last year's Canyon Inflite AL 9.0. Ultegra 6800.

For some reason they're not selling that frameset (though they're still selling the bike that uses the frameset).
The Inflite AL 8.0 and 9.0 will take a front mech. It's the winter trainer/ CX setup.
The Inflite AL 9.0 SLX doesn't - it's the proper racy CX frame and only takes 1x setups.

Though you've mostly confirmed that lot...

  • Aesthetics does come into though. As well as fitting you, functional for what you want, you also have to be happy with the look of your bike. Nobody wants to look down n think " fook, this is one ugly bike I'm riding"
Genesis are well built, good steel frames, that are pleasing on the eye, in the most part. I still regret selling my Equilibrium 853, and probably always will. Planet x/ on one serve a purpose, cheap and cheerful, but the couple I've ridden have been uninspiring to say the least. It's your cash, buy the frame you want, we're just here to advise and stir shit up.

  • Please continue to stir shit up for another 2 months. I definitely 'feel' faster on a bike that looks 'faster'... And that in turn makes me feel good. And that's the real reason I buy nice things. To feel good. Ha
