Can't remember his name, he is French.

looks like the MOT was past due on that tesla as well.
would that invalidate the insurance?

I have a firefighter buddy who really doesn’t like the lithium cells and says specifically the Tesla ones because they are of an older design with less safety features to protect them

Should have used the branded batteries and charger, not the cheap crap from Aliexpress.
-
• #382
Not necessarily.
An old colleague wrote her car off and it turns out it didn't have a valid MOT (expired ~3 months before the accident)
Insurance paid out but knocked £50 off the value (or something equally arbitrary) -

I don’t see any side impact beams in the doors of that Tesla.
Are they not required in UK? -

Aluminium. They melted.

"It began targeting drivers who cause “excessive noise” with £100 fixed penalty notices in 2020."
That 100 quid fine sure is going to discourage people driving around in noisy £million supercars

Need the Swiss system of fines as a percentage of net worth (or however it works).
-
• #388
Yep. Or just immediate confiscation.
-
• #389
Motoring fines should be in proportion to the value of the vehicle. Makes it much easier than assessing wealth/income. If billionaires want to avoid paying high fines by swapping their supercar for an escort then go for it.

^ definitely this
-
• #391
Taking the vehicle is already means tested. The value of the vehicle has been lost by the driver and the problem immediately removed from the roads.

But let's be clear. They don't even deal with people as it stands. How many people are over 12 demerit points and still driving?

7,000 to 8,000 a year.
35,500 people between 2017 and 2021. 142,000 were disqualified in the same period.
If you are in Cleveland, County Durham, Darlington, Humber, South Yorkshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, North and West Yorkshire, Northumbria, Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire then the MoJ are looking for magistrates and you could be the one deciding if a driver should be disqualified or not. Get a rubber book to throw at them while shouting on your bike.

I actually looked a cheap flat in Darlo. That would be a nice sideline. Do you get any money for dishing out justice? I assume not.

I think the back-handers are limitless.
-
• #396
No money in it. Old Skool public service.

How are teenagers able to get behind the wheel of a supercar here?
In Oz you have power restrictions when you don't have a full license and I don't think there's an insurance policy that would cover a bunch of P-platers in a Lambo.

I think they were being driven to a prom
-
• #400
They were going to their end of school prom so they're going to be 16, not driving but being driven.
It's a thing to turn up in a posh car/limo for prom
now I want chips for lunch
