26.0 refers to the handlebar clamp diameter and is independent of the stem shaft diameter. I've never seen an ahead stem with shaft as slim as a quill stem, but then I've always assumed that the butch manliness of an ahead stem was part of its attraction.

I've tried a couple of 31.8 ahead stems on my bike, no complaints about performance, but visually they're just a bit chunky for my liking. I think it's because the top tube seems to taper slightly towards the front on my bike, so a slimmer stem would look better. Do 26.0 stems have a thinner "shaft"? And if so any suggestions for what's available with a ~12 degree drop angle?
