Another +1 for the Marmot Precip. It has Pit Zips as well which is a good choice for a summer waterproof.

Went to Yosemite a few months back. We only had a day there and most tracks were flooded after a spout of bad weather so we just set off to Mirror Lake and back. Totally mind blowing, would love to go back already.

Anyone done some/much/any multi-day hiking/camping trips in Switzerland? Going to a conference in Lausanne at the end of June. Thinking off adding a few days on to the end of it, having my partner meet me there, and going for a bit of a trip. Seems to be endless options, so a bit unsure of where to start.

I live at the foot of the verbier climb. Spent a fair few night wild camping around here last summer. There'd be some really nice spots up in the gstaad leysin area too (where the tour de romandie went theough today!). Wild camping is generally fine as long as you pitch late, up early, not too near a path. I've never heard of anyone having any problems here.

But basically north of the rhone valley if you want beautiful rolling hills, south if you want alpine peaks.

Nice! We couldn't really get close to the upper/lower Yosemite falls, the spray had created a load of weird ice/frost combo when it hit the ground, can't remember the name of it, but the ranger was explaining that it was a lot deeper and less stable than it looked so the closed the whole lot off. We got super lucky with the weather other than that though, and timing for the the near-fire fall. The day before/after it was absolutely pissing it down.

That's rad. Would love to see the firefall.
As it was dead dry at the base of the falls we were lucky enough to be able to climb a bunch of dihedral laybacks and corners that are hidden in the mist and soaked 99% of the time.
Think we're aiming to go back next year for our first big wall routes. -

Few snaps from a recent day out in NZ. We did the Tongariro crossing back in March, "some light drizzle" ended up being <10m visibility from start to finish so we decided to head back when better weather was forecast and just do an out-and-back from Mangatepopo carpark to the summits of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro.
Set off with blue skies, about 2/3 of the way up Ngauruhoe the cloud came in and the dicks ahead dislodged a few chest-sized chunks of rock without thinking to call out/shout anything. After dodging those and a lot of yelling we scrambled across to a slightly more solid ridge and set about heading back down to the crater and pushed onto Tongariro instead. No scree and no dicks on the way up to the summit, in fact no people at all! Got some great views in/out of the cloud and definitely salvaged the day.
Walking into a brilliant sunset on the way back and luckily glanced back to catch the whole cliff face lit up behind us, photos don't really do that justice.

Looks nice and people-free.
Did the crossing a few years ago in the summer, lovely weather but too many people. -
• #594
There were a fair few people as we walked from the carpark towards Ngauruhoe but the majority carried straight on and it got a lot quieter. Most of them whinging about having to actually move their legs to see things.

About a week later we ended up spending a few nights at the various visitor centre carparks on the slopes of Mt Taranaki. Forecast was good and each morning the mountain was crystal clear. First we tried to get to the tarns for that photo, about half an hour after we set off it clouded over but we couldn't tell badly until emerging out of the bush about half way up and by that point we'd gone up enough steps that turning back would have been a total bummer. Nice enough stroll, basically a giant staircase each way and pretty boggy at the top. Met a few people doing multi-day tramps, most looking pretty muddy.
Next day we figured we'd dash up from Dawson Falls carpark to Syme Hut for lunch before some light showers mid-late afternoon. It's a stiff walk to the hut, around 5km gaining a little over 1000m in height, first half is mostly steps and boardwalk, the second half is scoria. They've put new poles in which made finding the route easy enough, although at times it felt like 1 step forward, 2 steps back. Heavy legs meant we didn't quite get there in time to miss the weather, just managed to pop out above the clouds and catch a little sun at the hut after lunch before heading back down the same way.

Quick Question on equipment, knives in particular. With the UK knife laws being quite strict, does it apply for hiking/ camping? When they state, EDC without a good reason, is camping a good reason to carry something that doesnt fall within the requirements?
-

That's the accepted wisdom. Don't give anyone a reason to question you having it and you shouldn't have any problem.

So I can have a massive Machete / Panga / Bowie / Glamping Sword?!
Can anyone recommend a lightweight waterproof for summer showers?
I'm going hiking in La Palma a week on Saturday and the Mountain Hardware one i had has de-laminated and now leaks like a sieve.
