  • He did work for them (of course I can't verify that) and would make sense to bring decals home.
But the ones he put on my Holdsworth (for the word, not the model name) weren't original (he told me so)

  • Who knows?!

  • Very nice. What are you doing re gears? i think a 5 speed (nuove record rear derailleur) would be brilliant and simple (and lighter).

Vaz used to be the paintshop foreman at Holdsworth (apparantly)

  • updates?

  • Just out of interest, why do PX not want to sell certain decals through H Lloyd?

Nice project btw, I'm looking forward to seeing it the finished and finding out your dads reaction :)

I used Ellis Briggs for some frame repair work on my EB/Elsegood Minster and they were excellent.

  • Sorry I totally forgot to update this. Bike's all finished but unfortunately the frame was delayed getting back from Ellis Briggs and I couldn't put it all together before heading on holiday, so we had to present dad with a frame and a load of parts in Cornwall! But it worked out quite well really because it meant that all of the grandkids (about 8 of them I think, I'm a rubbish uncle...) were able to present him with little random gifts which me and my siblings wrapped up for them. A nut and bolt here, a brake caliper there, etc. When the wheel-shaped presents arrived he finally twigged we weren't larking about. Then we presented the frame and he was thrilled to bits.

I took all my tools down to cornwall and we did most of the build there. He took it back home to Shropshire with him to finish it off.

The frame looks amazing. These photos don't really do it justice.

    Final spec was:

Wienmann vainqueur centre pulls. Found a near-perfect set on ebay
SA 5 speed rear hub with 22t sprocket.
SA cranks and SA 44t chainring
700C mavic open sport rims with marathon pluses
Vintage Campag front hub - another ebay find, near mint condition. Silky smooth! It came with the rear hub too and I said dad can have that if he'd rather have derailleurs instead in the future.
Milremo (I think) pedals - my bro in law had some nearly new ones he brought down from Edinburgh
Brown Brooks flyer saddle and matching brown bar tape
    Original GB stem and bars.
    Black SKS chromoplastic guards

I got the rest of the transfers off ebay, probably not 100% legit, but they look good. The original downtube one just said 'Holdsworth' in a fairly plain font (not as plain as the late 70s-80s font though) but the nearest set I could find said 'WF Holdsworth' in a slightly fancier font, so I just clipped off the WF bit.

I will get some proper photos of the full build soon - the bike's a couple of hundred miles away at my dad's, and he's off on the narrowboat at the moment but when he gets home I'll get him to send some photos.

Thanks for all the tips and advice! And for the decals Anidel!

  • not sure...they should allow them to re-sell the original decals from them.

  • The Mistral decal finally to a good use!!! So glad I participated in your dad's present! :)

  • just seems really odd......maybe it has something to do with who actually owns the Holdsworth name now.

Anyway, the frame and the spec looks great @BobbyBriggs , looking forward to post narrow-boat full build photos!

  • I was at home this weekend so took a pic. It's not quite finished yet: mudguards are on temporarily, no cable guides for the gear cable yet, and no bar tape because dad's decided he wants a higher stem now he's 70 (fair enough).

Still, I'm quite pleased with it overall, and the gearing is low enough for him to make it up the hill from town.

I'm struggling to find a taller quill stem that's not ugly though. Any tips?

I also admonished him for the shitty cable lock.
