Trouble bleeding Hylex

  • I wanted to shorten the length of the hose to the rear caliper and switch the front hose for a longer one.
I have bled Tektro brakes before, though never with a banjo hose kit.

Front caliper with new Banjo hose kit bled ( does this expression only cover emptying the hose?) just fine and is now firm. I bled this attaching the syringe to the caliper and overflowing the chamber with oil at the lever.

Trying same procedure at the rear I wasn't able to press any fluid into the system. When emptying the hoses for oil the rear was also the one being hard to get the oil out of.
I have tried to fill the hose with oil from the lever attaching an open ended hose to the caliper. This way I can get the oil into the system flowing from the lever to the caliper, but when closing the system, lever is spongy and not working to my satisfaction.

I have tried following this manual: http://www.trpbrakes.com/userfiles/file/HYLEX%20MANUAL%20REV%20A070213.pdf

What can I be doing wrong? Trying to troubleshoot, what should be my approach?

I am leaving the workshop for today BROKEN ;-)
Will give it another shot tomorrow afternoon. Any tips are welcome.

I can't find any videos or pictures describing how it's done. So any helpful link are cherished.

  • Disc brake thread, yo.

Not sure I read it right, but you are pushing fluid down into the system, from the master cylinder into the caliper, right?

That seems silly. The air will want to go up.

Give it a helping hand by pushing fluid up and in to the caliper. Install another syringe on to the caliper exit and push fluid back into the master cylinder and out of the bleed port.

Or did I read the manual incorrectly and that's what you are doing?

  • Sorry didn't know of the disc thread. Search for Hylex on lfgss and didn't find any info.
    I have tried both ways.

I will give it a go like you suggested again tomorrow

  • Is the rear hose new or just shortened?
It sound like there is a bad connection / kink in the hose if you cannot get the fluid easily in or out.

A nice way to work with annoying brakes is to take it completely of the bike and mount the lever high on something and have the caliper lower on the floor/hanging down. Just for less frustration.

  • Hmm I will look for kinks and try your suggestion as well. Thanks!

  • ..

  • There's the general disc brake thread - might get some more exposure there.

  • Alright it worked out.

Attached bleed nossle and short hose to lever and syringe to caliper. Left brakes on the bike. There wasn't any problem getting oil through the system this time around. Did check for kinks but there wasn't any.
It is just as easy to bleed these as any hydraulic disc brakes. I have no idea what I done wrong first time around. Thanks for you help guys.
