  • Hi,
What's the rear spacing on the day one? Any cold setting required for the 10 speed conversion?

    Cheers,

    Dave

  • Nah, it's 135mm, and my wheels are built on xt hubs, so it was just bolting on the mech hanger, fookin about with the limit stops on the derailuer. Works a dream, rides lovely, further down the line may put a larger cassette on.

  • The pads that are on now are Ashima, great in the dry, meh in the wet. Are Swissstop ghp my best bet?

  • Go for good old Shimano one, they last a long time and have very predictable performance (i.e. same in all condition).

  • May just pinch the ones off the wifes bike then, she has xt vs, so they'll do for testing purposes.

  • Do you feel a massive difference between the One and the Fer frame wise?

  • Different geo, but both feel neutral, croix marginally lighter due to 725 and carbon fork, both lovely to ride. Prefer the colour of my Day One though!

  • Went for a nice ride upto Keep Pedalling in Manchester today. 60 mile round trip. The kind folks there ordered me some bits from Madison, mainly the Genesis Alt bars (Longitude and Caribou bars), also got me some Koolstop pads.
Things to get now are mtb shifter and rear derailleur, probably Shimano zee, CRC have em at a decent price.
    Pics to follow.

  • Some bits arrived in the post today. Zee shifter and rear derailleur, and Odi flangeless longnecks. Bars all set up, Zee, Odi, and some Tektro levers I had knockin around from years ago. Just need gear outer, brake cables, and a couple of canti cable hangers and we're all set. Should be able to pick those up in next couple of days, built up for a weekend pootle.
Pics as soon as it's set up.

  • The Equilibrium 853 I used to own. Now owned by a guy who intends to ride it from Norway to Portugal. At least it's being ridden!

  • What's the mech hanger?
I have a sunrace cheapy that is design for old horizontal frames.
Converting a frame with trackend, so would love to know what works for you.

  • Used the Problem Solver hanger, available from SJS cycles, think it was about £20 with postage. Works well, replaces the non qr bolt, pushes the derailleur further out, so fiddling with the high/low stop screws is required.

  • Got to lbs in time. Cables and bits purchased. Kettle on, rollie rolled, bars and cables swapped, setting up gears, biblical rainstorm stops play.
Hopefully I'll get it sorted tomorrow.

  • Wow. These bars are wide.

  • .

  • .

  • Ah considered those, but the description of emergency use scared me haha!
    Glad to know it works.

  • First impressions of new set up, very comfortable, bars, at 720mm, are a bit wide, so out with the hacksaw tonight, maybe down to 620mm. Still need to fit new brake pads, and maybe pop X4 stem back on, bit too high with Pro stem on. Zee shifts perfectly, for budget gears they are superb.
Not at all happy with the stability of the Carradice Super C saddlepack, so debating a rear rack and pannier or a Blackburn outpost saddlepack or bar bag, Restrap bar bag also of interest, £65 including Ortlieb dry sac, anybody got experience of them?

  • Getting ready to do 100miler with my eldest, he's trying to raise a bit if cash for a drama trip to NY, so said I'd do a sponsored ride with him, so drops back on.
Been reading a few things on here and other bits ont web, future upgrades will be carbon forks, inline seatpost (imminent, as I've found a Race Face one for £20), Gravel king tyres and eventually Paul cantis.

  • and eventually Paul cantis.

    I'd get the Shimano one.

Paul are lovely but not the ultimate cantis to go for.

  • Do they have greater stopping power than Pauls?

  • Stopping power smopping power. Paul cantis look way better, that's what counts right?!

  • Paul makes a v that works with road levers.

Mud and tradition are the only reason I can think of that you'd buy new canti's.

  • I would says on par, Shimano are less fiddly and have road shoes insert which is handy.

Only thing worth going for is their centerpull or their mini-v.

  • Spot on.
