Got some work done today. New ring, a CX1 38t. Will change cassette to a 11-42 which will give me a gear inch range of 25,6-98. The original 2x setup that had 26,8-124, but I don't need those big gears, so happy get rid of the front derailleur. Think it looks pretty sharp too.
Swapped the headset bearing cover for a black one, just need to wash off the logos with acetone.
Waiting for new wheels – Easton Heist 24 – which should be a nice upgrade.

Is that for thru-axles? What are you going to do with the dropouts on frame/fork? I was just riding my AWOL today and thinking how the heck do I get a pair of wheels with thru-axles on that thing?..

Shaved off a little weight and added 4 mm rim width. Looking forward to take it for a spin in the forest.
For those interested, the stock AWOL wheelset weighs 2030 gr with rim tape on.

Been looking through the thread, very nice evolutions.
Question about the tyres: do you use them on paved surfaces as well? And if so: how do they roll on paved surfaces? I'm thinking about putting them on my tourer which will mainly see paved surfaces, but would like some studs in case I will bike on gravel/off road a bit.

Do you still own the Ortlieb frontrollers? I'm wondering if they fit on the pizzarack.
The bike looks amazing btw! -

Thanks guys. Really looking forward to ride it the coming months. Just booked a two week trip to California with a friend. Bringing the AWOL fully rigged and we're renting a big ass car. Plan is to check out some cool places and bikepack for a couple of days here and there.
@Tijs They roll surprisingly well, at least that's how it feels. I haven't done any head-to-head tests though. But if the bike would mainly see paved surfaces or gravel, I'd think it look for something a bit smoother, like the WTB Nano.
@kjlem I still have them, but they're set up for thinner tubing, so can't mount them right now. It does look like they will fit without problem, though.

lovely bike... sorely tempted to score an AWOL elite on cycle-to-work. looks p.well specced.
need to look out the thread on what kit to pack for weekend touring (assuming there is one)

How do you like the flatbar for touring? Don't you miss the drops for riding with headwinds?

Haven't been able to do any touring with this setup yet. But the plan is to explore forests and mountains, so fire roads and trails mostly.
The trips last year were all fun, but what gave me most was getting lost in the forest. I see enough of roads and cars with my other bikes, so this makes sense to me. Of course I could've kept the drops and used it the same way, but I don't have an MTB, so this setup lets me tag along with friends on single-track without getting another bike.
