I think it's a failure to comply with the DPA but I don't know if that is sufficient to be criminal.

Lock'em up anyway. Just to be sure.

Further down that page...
Data protection law says that people who capture images or audio
recordings from outside their property boundary using a fixed camera,
such as a CCTV camera or smart doorbell, should:tell people that they are using recording equipment;
Which never happens with domestic CCTV

Just to update on the battery situation - new Energizer batteries have so far lasted a month, so I guess I either had a bad set of batteries or a random battery drain issue.

Does anyone have recommendations for ZigBee temp/humidity sensors.
I want one for the wine cellar (cupboard under the stairs really, but I'm aiming for gadgets and golf club)

I had a bunch of these and they did the job.

I've got about 10 Sonoff SNZB-02 around the flat. Found them somewhere for about Β£8 a pop.
They do the job perfectly. I got a Sonoff ZBBridge and flashed it with Tasmota so it would integrate with things a lot more easily.

Ordered a few bits from Pimoroni:
- Adafruit ESP32-S2 Feather
- I2C Ultrasonic distance unit
- BME680 Air quality (inc CO2) measuring thingy
- RPi Pico W (for a different project)
Will use the first 3 bits to fit under my sit/stand desk to measure air quality and desk height (to help remind me to stand more), plus I'll also zip-tie a 1-wire temp sensor to the radiator tail to help try and track how often my heating is on. Went for a Adafruit Feather over a RPi for this as I don't want to have to manage another mini computer somewhere in my flat.

With your knowledge of programming languages I don't think you'll have any problem developing for an MCU. If you're really keen, you can package the readings up and send them over mqtt to home assistant.

Anybody after a single Ring camera (like this one)..
Itβs been used indoors only (sat on a windowsill) for approx 2 months. Lighting inside mean that chances of any useful footage from it are nil.
Essentially as-new but no box etc.

Bought a second hand Intel NUC to consolidate various things (Prometheus, Mimir, Grafana, exporters, etc) on as the existing ESXi host is possibly a bit flaky. Royal Mail took ages to deliver it to the depot (it arrived in the building last Thursday but was only made available for collection today). I then went down to collect it 8 minutes after they'd shut for the day. D'oh. But it means I can have fun setting it all up and transferring stuff over tomorrow.
Now I need to investigate how easy it is to dedicate some of my QNAP NAS to be an S3 bucket store.

Amazon open up their IoT network to third parties in America: https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/28/23659191/amazon-sidewalk-network-coverage.
Will be interesting to play with it if/when they roll it out globally.

Please excuse the cross post spam:
We have a Tado thermostat, receiver, bridge and TRV going spare. The bridge is the version before subscriptions were introduced so has the premium subscription tier activated for life, for free.
Any interest before ebay?

It seems I'm 90% of the way to full de-Googling and I hadn't noticed I was doing that.
I've no Amazon devices, no Samsung devices, it's a Google house.
But I've moved a lot of the thermostat stuff into Home Assistant so that it does awareness of the whole house.
Music has moved from Spotify and Google devices to Plex.
I'm really only left with the voice control from Google Minis and Nest Hubs, but increasingly I keep the microphones turned off and am using my phone as a remote... it's a bit like Star Trek "Computer, do this" but only after they tap their communicator badge, I tap the phone and say it and leave all the mics physically disabled.
But now I'm wondering, is there an OSS voice assistant that integrates with Home Assistant that anyone has used? My use of Google Home is secondary to Home Assistant at this point and only exists for the voice control... may as well completely remove the last things.

an OSS voice assistant that integrates with Home Assistant
I joined up in the early funding stages, but never followed through with a purchase, as it's just too expensive for what it is. And the actual release version was some boxy monstrosity, compared to the good looking alpha / beta prototype.
The googles & amazons of the world have no doubt discounted the hardware (and enjoyed much greater economies of scale, probably), in favour of that sweet, sweet data mining.
You can self host the software, however, and self build on Pi (or any hardware, really) from scratch or with one of the VM images.

I just read that they have winded down their operation - apparently, they were burning through cash so fast that they were only able to fulfill old orders by taking on new orders.
Should have become a steel frame builder with that business model.
Is it criminal? You might be subject to regulatory / civil action, but there's no crime being committed or prosecuted, as far as I am aware of.
