I have no switches just a hue bridge and 10 lights

A mate asked me to do a burglar "alert" thing for his place as he just moved. I've got homeassistant and some huawei sensors at home and was considering replicating that with a couple of cameras activated when doors open. Is there something better I should think about?

I'm not sure I would want Homeassistant as anything other than a hobby box - Certainly not if I wanted to rely on it for anything serious.

I think it's more a case of alerting him if something funny happens rather than calling the police for him

How come?

Fragility & stability, mostly, particularly if you try and do anything that's not out-of-the-box, or if you're not following good process.

I've found this in the past but now I've stopped pissing about with it mine has run solidly for the past 4 months without being touched.

Hmm OK, good to know. I've not had any problems yet apart from an update that failed and broke my instance. I am backing up and the Pi running it has an M.2 SSD now so I shouldn't have any SD card-related woes (although a lot of folk seem to think they're overstated with good quality SD cards).
I am almost certainly not following good process though ;)

Can I make Hue operate with a switch but automatical go to different scenes depending on time if day? I set up two automations for day and night, but I'm not sure that's it. Seemed to work but just had a funny moment when the daytime scene ended and all the lights went off right before the climax of a horror movie. Automations are for sunrise-sunset and vice versa.

With something like homeassistant, yes.

The Hue brand switches can have different ‘on’ actions depending on what time of day it is straight out the box - think that’s what you want. i.e, launch ‘morning’ scene on press between 0500-0800, ‘white’ scene between 0800-1700, ‘relax’ scene between 1700-0000, ‘night’ between 0000-0500 which is roughly how I have mine set.

How is this achieved? I can't see it in the Hue app?
-
• #1014
Yeah that's what I'm after, but ideally with customisable scenes. It seemed to be working but maybe it was just going to default scenes.

I should probably resd the instructions on my hue switches someday.
-

As long as you have a scene set up (custom or default) the switch can activate it at any point - as in the 2nd screenshot.

My app doesn't look like that. Is that iOS?

Maybe it's the new style dimmer switch. Not my original ones.
Which would be lame, given that this is presumably all done in software.

Android, Smart Button switch.
Does seem an oversight if the old switch can’t trigger the same function. Let me put the iOS app on my iPad and see what it gives me.

Yep - same menu on the iPad for what it’s worth.

I think the issue is that I have the V1 dimmer, which appears to not have that functionality. No bother, I can get it to scroll through the scenes which is close enough.

Same here.
I think I can make it work using Hue Essentials.
Not that bovvered to be honest..not in my top 10 to do list items....

The frustrating thing is that it's the Hue Bridge that offers all of these types of functionality, not the switches. So there's nothing stopping Hue making this functionality available on all of the earlier switches as it was a software update to the Bridge that added the capability and they've just chosen to limit it to the new Dimmer.

Planned obsolescence. Capitalists gonna capitalise.
I read on Reddit that the All4hue so can make it work too. Think I'll keep the £6 for now.
Same. Have enjoyed the new version. I don't use Hue widgets though, just Hue switches and the app.
