one more thing, I always see the seatpost clamp set up that way. Am I doing it wrong or is it supposed to be clamped that way?

Depends on where the cutout in the seattube is I think. For example this Salsa:

(It's at the front so it's reversed.)

I think it probably makes zero to no difference which way the clamp is, but on my CAAD 10 the camp has a little rivet that protrudes, so the only way that it will fit is with the bolt to the front.

That CAAD is very close to a perfect hhsrb for me.

Black brakes, new gen levers and another crankset would top it off.
