  • Hope the tree is OK, a near 2 tonne hatchback into it at prob 40mph could have killed it.

Think it was a nissan leaf, new one, pretty quick 0-40 mph, catch a lot of people out how quick they get to that speed, then they handle like a basic hatchback with 600 (or maybe even 800kg? No idea) kg of batteries strapped to the underside and back of it.
Had use of Renault Zoe/Ze quite a lot this year, and yeah, they get to 40mph quickly, and they turn into a corner quite nicely, but then the physics of a small cheap hatchback with a LOT of batteries in it, quickly starts to take control of the situation.
End of the day, drivers fault clear and simple, but going to see more electric cars in 'how did it go that fast into that obstacle' type collisions occurring.

  • It's interesting that the driver fell foul of the very slight bend at the end of that street. Perhaps that was one of those mistakes in which the person accidentally hit the accelerator. Somehow, it doesn't look as if it could have been someone driving too fast all the way along the street, as they would have seen the wall ahead from way off. Obviously, nothing's impossible.

  • Interesting observation with the different weight distribution. Definitely one to watch out for.

  • No speed bumps on that road and from the other end, and when turning into it it might look like an ordinary straight road at first glance. You turn into the road, jab the accelerator on your far-too-many-bhp car, start fiddling with your phone, and boom, you're in someone's living room.

It could happen to anyone who shouldn't have a driving license.

  • Ah, not an explanation you reach for immediately nowadays, but makes sense.

They called in a unit from Edmonton--a product of fire station closures? Seems too far to come.

  • Happened in Germany today according to Reddit:

  • Didn't break any windows. 1/10.

  • Thanks, it's always good to stress that one should speak of the drivers, not the cars:

    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/258761/

    Here's the main BBC article:

    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leicestershire-56872136

The injury sounds horrific--her skull was broken into three pieces. There are numerous indicators along that street that it's a location for speeding--just look at the defences on this evidently rather old piece of filtering:

    https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.6458117,-1.0706534,3a,75y,309.99h,79.21t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssAfmjEeEAFDu4txTP4DyHw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

I'd guess that drivers tried to rat-run along there even after it was initially filtered, which is why those additional barriers were built. Drivers may also have taken that corner at speed, perhaps to rat-run through to the junction of Lower Keyham Lane, Humberstone Drive, and Gipsy Lane. With this isolated filter, the rat run has now probably been relocated to Steins Lane and Main Street.

Next to it is a new-looking house, plus adjacent garden walls (its own and the neighbouring house's), that turns its back on the street completely:

    https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.6458482,-1.0706074,3a,75y,354.01h,81.46t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sgn4VlsEvtxQjnkWYXv4XiA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

The street opposite (Abbots Road South) is also filtered at the junction.

Also, damage to buildings has happened many times before:

Mr Thathyala said: "A neighbour told me this happened to the same house a few years ago. Exactly the same situation, same house.

"This is a busy road and at night - when it is quiet people speed down here.

"This is not safe for anybody. There needs to be some safety measures."

Resident Moira Hampton said: "This may be the eighth time or more this bend on the ring road has contributed to damaging properties.

"Cars have driven off both sides of the road. This is the first time such a serious injury has happened.

    And (picture caption):

Residents blame the crashes on a sharp bend on Hungarton Boulevard, which forms part of Leicester's ring road

I imagine that caption would have been added by a sub; the bend isn't sharp at all, but at excessive speed bends obviously become sharper.

You get the usual gamut of reaction--from Claudia Webbe, the local MP, the usual call that 'the road must be made safer', when it's driver behaviour that's at issue, which requires much more fundamental intervention.

I hope the victim recovers fully, although you do wonder if she even can. :(

  • horrendous.
I'm pretty familiar with this stretch of road - you couldn't describe the bend as sharp.
excess speed + distracted driver is the only way that crash could have happened.
hope the injured lady recovers and the kids aren't too traumatised.

  • No building hit but you have to be a special sort of moron to roll it on this 20mph road with width restrictions

  • They were going for a different DS70 POV for sure.

What is the Grover sticker on the back?

  • Not sure I passed it and couldn’t stop for a decent look. Bit may go back for more in depth gander later. Went back about an hour or so later and it was gone. Maybe the rolled it back and drove it away :)

  • I guess we should have a thread for 'bizarre seemingly unforced crashes', but I'm not going to start one.

  • This tragic incident that I spotted recently would certainly go in there.

  • This youtube chanel is supremely enjoyable from a 'car drivers reaping the rewards of their own stupidity' perspective: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCamiAALTPQs-fU0g9OfaJpQ/videos

  • Amazing!
Interesting how some cars you'd think would have no chance get through and then cars that 'look the part' almost catch fire.

  • quality content.
the best bit for me is the kids looking on laughing and willing the drivers on in an effort to get splashed.

  • 9/10 of those are fails because of the speed. If they slowed down, they would probably have made it through.

1:35 in this video is the perfect example:

    https://youtu.be/MJ1MDza9fYM?t=95

BMW - slow and crosses fine
Mondeo - crosses immediately afterwards but quicker and fucks it

Also - the new Defender going through at 4:45 is glorious.

  • Ah, good old Rufford Lane...

Fella from my school lived right nearby. Hundreds of cars get trashed there.

Ridiculous thing is the detour, if the water is up, isn't far at all.
