Here's Lord Cav of Astana winning Stage 2 of the Tour de Hongrie. Is he using a weirdly high gear? https://youtu.be/UAqsp8-zx-E?si=AS46Nr3aOkZep_4N

Great news that Sir Steve “Cavs” Cavendish is off to see the Queen to receive his long overdue knighthood!
However this isn’t great news for his world record attempt at the Le Tour this year, that heavy medallion will surely weigh him down too much to be competitive with the likes of Johnny Milano or Jesper and Philip’s Son. -

Watching the new series of the Netflix TdF show ‘Unchained’. Neither Ben O’Connor nor Ar Pidders coming across very well so far…
I guess elite athletes in stressful situations get some sort of pass, but still.

I don’t understand the awful dubbing. Most of them are already speaking English why have we dubbed them over with someone else speaking English? Just use subtitles if you must. That and the “fake” commentary make the whole thing difficult to watch for me.
The women’s version is way worse, the fake commentary bloke couldn’t even be arsed to correct the French/English translation and just reads whatever it says on the paper. “Fell, fell!” When there’s a crash. FFS. -

You know you can choose subtitles rather than dubbing?
-
• #49688
I get zero dubbing. It's ridiculous, like reality TV, but my favourite is Steve Chainel's enthusiastic comments.

I’ve tried to watch it, but 90% of the dialogue is so obviously constructed it’s really distracting. So much conversation is behind masks or on head turns and the intonation is all over the place. It’s slick, but a hard watch.

Which would be pointless unless I want to get rid of all the sound. Unless you can choose the original audio with American subtitles.
-

I’m trying Wigan Will’s suggestion tonight and will attempt to find the original audio without turning my whole television French.

Yes the reconstructed commentary is annoying, but it must be difficult to help the narrative along if the actual commentary of the clip you want to use was Carlton Kirby talking about a castle.
-

I meant the actual rider, DS etc dialogue. Almost every conversation is a construction and most of it is obviously taken from here there and everywhere and then cut behind non sync shots. Hence why loads of it is on backs of heads or behind masks where you can’t see their lips move.

Will is a genius. It’s even easier on the firestick to select French original with English subtitles. This must have been how I watched the last series or they changed the defaults.
Now watchable. -

The most annoying thing about the documentary for me is the fake chain / freewheel noise they have whenever there is a bike on screen. If I was a mechanic for one of the teams I'd be a bit pissed that they make it sound like all the bikes are set up badly. Either that or everyone was riding SRAM in the 10t with Chris King hubs last year.

There’s a surprising lack of sound packs for decent bicycle equipment. I did sound design for a gumball 3000 docuseries a few years back and we had to record the studio owner’s kids bike to get some freewheel noise for a BMX sequence. At the time I only had fixed bikes so couldn’t assist
Based on the probably-AI dubbing, I imagine they didn’t spend much on post for Unchained

The bit in Unchained with Pello Bilbao talking about the death of Mäder was really sobering. Obviously you know it's a tragedy but to see it written so raw across the face of someone quite a lot later was heartbreaking.
