  • Anyway - up the Zoncolan tomorrow. Apparently the ‘easy’ side.

  • What a chipper.

  • I can see the GC teams trying to get guys in the break for this one. Could be a great stage to watch from the start.

  • Apparently the ‘easy’ side.

It is, only the last 3 kms have bonkers gradients. The hard side is 8 kms at 12% average, this side is 13.1 kms at just under 9% average.

  • Possibly a better battle for TV if the main group stays together for longer?

I remember when Carthy won on the Angliru, pretty much everyone seemed to cross the line after riding solo for the last 3km.

  • Nah he was just making up numbers

It was only 7 months ago! I worry about your memory. The top seven crossed the line in three groups:

    1. Carthy alone
2-4 Vlasov, Carapaz and Mas at 16 secs
5-7 Roglic, Kuss and Martin at 26 secs

  • Because free merch.

  • Interesting that it's kind of the reverse, the other side starts very steep and then rounds off towards the end, whereas this side is a long long drag and then pitches up even more to finish.

  • Comments on there are a state, lots of sulking that it's "easy" or "not Zoncolan".

  • Nice little preview for tomorrow featuring Donkey Kong on a Brompton https://streamable.com/r1nwvi

  • Thank heavens it's the easy side and the GC riders have another day off.

Actually, think about that horrible climb near you, the one a mile from me is 25%, the steepest bit is about 50m long and the entire mountain is about 500m. 8km with an average of 9%+ is quite unpleasant, or fucking vicious, whichever hurts more, particularly when attacks happen late in the steeper part of the easy incline.

The GC is far from over, although Bernal looks imperious, so did Simon (Philip) Yates in the first two weeks not so long ago.

  • All highlights should be delivered like this.

  • Those bars belong in the gravel thread.

  • Do we think he attacked or just tried to lead out and took the last bend really well? Seemed like he just rolled away then realised he had a gap

  • He was interviewed afterwards and said he was doing the leadout, looked down and saw no-one was on his wheel, so just kept going as hard as he could in the hope that he won the stage. He didn't know how he'd got the gap.

  • Jai Hindley not taking the start today, he’s been suffering from a bad saddle sore the past few days.

  • Yeh wasn’t clear what happened behind. Presumably someone pulled out of the line, someone else braked and he got a gap. Or he’s a monster and just did a Cancellara

Anyone able to work out what sort of UK time they hit the zoncolan?

He had Bora-Hansgrohe's Daniel Oss on his wheel, with his team-mate David Dekker behind Oss. He got round the final corner quicker than Oss and got the gap, Oss made an effort to close it, did an elbow flick to get the next person to come through, no-one did, so Oss looked back and realised it was another Jumbo-Visma rider on his wheel, and had to keep going. All the while Affini was growing his gap.

It's a 45 minute climb for the GC leaders, so they'll start it around 3-3:30 pm depending on how fast the stage is prior to hitting it.

  • Sean Kelly's words fit so well to the music. I think he should now make a Streets-style album.

  • Second Rest Day

  • I love Carthy.
Especially for making tall people feel good about their own climbing technique!

  • Judging from Matt Stephens IG weather looks pretty horrid on the Zoncolan at present

  • I saw that Ganna was in the front 10, and got excited that he might do a last km attack, but then he drifted back.
