Contador said something to Aru a few seconds after Trofimov attacked. In my mind it was: "He can go, you can't." I don't understand why Contador wouldn't have followed Landa otherwise - it didn't even look like he thought about it (unless we was toast, but he did make a little dig near the end).

Yes, it shows that, but also, the tweet shows that Contador agreed to let Landa go. Aru was the weakest of the three. Contador could have tried to keep up with Landa and drop Aru again (which was a bit awkward).* It's difficult to know who would have won, but Contador certainly had a shot and by not going with him he, maybe not gifted, but made it much more possible for Landa to take the win.

Or I'm missing something.

Why would contador gift a win here? I can't think of a single reason.

Contador was riding with bettering Aru as his primary concern. So best not to go into the red (chasing for the stage) only for him to come round late on.

I think he probably sussed Landa and Trofimov were still strong.

The reason was he get to warm down on his turbo and start recovering immediately whilst stage winner is pissing about with oversized bottles of fizz.
