This is going to come back and bite me, but I think Valverde is done. He’s good enough to finish top ten in a stage race still, but his days of winning major races are over.

It’s not like he was ever really prolific though.

16-17 he was really good but before then and since, he's been top 10 material but not really a standout. Looking at it dispassionately his 16-17 performance was unusual, he's just reverted to type (which is still good, just not at that level)

I was tempted to say G was done a few weeks ago, but his effort to make up ground for fourth yesterday was mightily impressive. I think he could win a few stages this season and take up a mountain-road captain role, like his chum Rowe-y (Rowe Dog?) on the flats, but I can’t see him winning a GT again.

I agree - still wish he'd specialised in the classics - we'll never know.
