Wow... seems pretty harsh to me.

What an idiotic decision. Basically the UCI are saying it's okay to endanger yourself and others by jumping a level crossing, but acts of sportsmanship are wrong.

Is the logic simply that teams exist in cycling for a reason, and to form greater coalitions is not acceptable?

It seems pretty shitty and harsh to see someone penalized for something that, on the face of it, came about from what looks like an act of good sportsmanship.

Simon Clarke admitted he did it because he was an "Aussie mate." That puts it in a slightly different perspective, but AndyP's point still stands. Harsh.

Technically it wasn't the giro's decision, it was the panel of commissars, but entertaining difference of opinions none the less.

Exceptionally harsh when it wasn't a stage where the assistance would enable Porte to gain anything (other than 'gaining' a smaller loss) and exceptionally ill-judged when it looks like the commissiares are doing it to favour Aru and that does a lot more to affect the credibility of the Giro than showing discretion would have.

I disagree, but I do think the race may be less interesting now. Which really sucks.

Commissaires are able to use discretion, rather than having to stick to the letter, and do so, for example, when riders are outside the time limit. It's inconceivable that they would have docked Aru two minutes. Whether that is fair or not I am not sure, but penalising Porte, and then saying they have no choice, makes them look ridiculous.
