Surely there is a walk down the last 500 metres if not last 1K to identify (and mitigate) risks to the riders? It was a bloody brave sprint but was 1/2 second from catastrophic.

Exactly, that's what one would expect. I really can't get my head around it. Any narrowing of the available road in the last 1K is unacceptable, especially on a flat run-in with speeds around or over 70kph. Mind blowing.

Also probably why Cavendish won’t win again, he’s not going to do the moves that Ewan and Akermann Have pulled.

Haven’t seen a pure drag race sprint for a while either. Every sprint is messy and potentially dangerous.

It seems surprising to me that the pressure to perform (see the public humiliation of Aru) hasn't really been linked to the danger in sprint finishes. If you give racers 1 year contracts then tell them they have to win races to get another one it's enevitable they'll do dangerous things to make sure it happens. Not sure I can suggest a solution but it seems to me it's not just the fault of the course designers.

Some riders come out of GTs flying, others come out on their knees so it's hard to say. But the way WVA and GVA are riding, I reckon they'll be pinging come October.
