Grim news: reading that Nicholas Portal has died of a heart attack. Just 40 years old.

Team Ineos DS, Nicolas Portal, has died of a heart attack, aged 40.

Awful news.

That’s awful, was just reading about him becoming a DS in Peter Cossins’ book this morning.

Did any DS win more TDF than him?

Cyrille Guimard. He won, I think, seven Tours with three different riders; Van Impe, Hinault and Fignon. Portal had won six with three different riders; Froome, Thomas and Bernal.

Just saw this. Shocking news. So awful.

Really awful news and it's clear how loved and respected he was.

I don’t think there’s anyone in cycling who seemed quite as much of a lovely person. He just seemed to have that kind of energy and was so grounded and would always keep things in perspective. Was always really happy to see him giving the post race interviews. Horribly sad.

Maybe a situation of any press is better than none, and by doing this EF team will get in the news...

If you were being cynical you'd say he was simply getting in there first for bonus points before the races are inevitably cancelled. Or, just possibly, he's right and doing the right thing.

Jumbo Visma have joined EF Education in opting to miss Strade Bianchi on Saturday. EF look like missing all three of the early season classics in Italy.

Do EF even race Pro stuff any more? Aren't they the Children of the Gravelution?

Mitchelton-Scott cancelling all races until 22 march.

Statistically, the current time will (probably) be the lowest risk of infection this season. It doesn't take a genius to predict the likely spread, with no apparent likelihood of a vaccination becoming available before Summer. That is, if Summer hasn't already been cancelled.
