Yeah, Greipel has really changed his tactics, to his credit. He looks fucking scary powering off the front.

Sacrificing himself for the team. It means the other quick steppers don't need to lead the chase. If someone else takes it up they are weakened. If no-one chases he's away with a good chance of a win.
