You think the front went as well? I thought it stayed planted.

Goes to show that a committed strong rider with a decent gap is hard to pull back in a group without cohesion. What Fuglsang and Alaphillippe got wrong in Amstel.

Valgren was asked on US TV why Aru was not further up the field in the final. He told the interviewer: “Ask him”.
He said Aru was on his wheel but didn’t stay there and was non-communicative. There was little he could do for Aru in those circumstances, he said.
Valgren then asked the interview: “Did we lose the (yellow) jersey or what?”
And when he was told Froome now had it, he said: “Ah, good,” with a broad grin.

I think you could probably class Alaphilippe as a climber; he won two mountain stages and the polka dot jersey in the tour last year

Alaphilippe basically has the same punchy climber strengths as Valverde, but not as dopey.
Decent TT as well. Could do very well in GC as protected rider, but possibly too boring for him. -
• #21061
Good point. I always think of him as a puncheur that can climb a bit.
-
• #21062
He's on the wrong team if he ever decides to ride for GC.

How do cycling fans choose who to believe and who to be sceptical about? Granted Valverde has actually been busted, I still wouldn't vouch for anyone I didn't personally know.
-
• #21065
He's been busted but never admitted. Bit hard to earn the trust of fans.
-
• #21066
Isn't Alaphilippe French? It's real bad news getting busted for being on the Sauce there.

Respectively, WADA, and every single competitive cyclist ever.

You can't be certain of anyone, this is true.
You can be certain that busted dopers have cheated in the past. Whether they are still is again unknowable, but you do know that even if they have stopped they are likely to have gained benefits from the doping that goes beyond the period they doped.
If they then double down and deny it or show no remorse you can be certain that they don't regret it or feel guilt for doing it.
So basically Valverde, hence why he gets stick.

It is going to be a shitshow in Yorkshire with all the fracking protests, likely to overshadow the race itself. Sky/Ineos PR is fucking awful: race as Sky in Yorkshire and launch the new kit elsewhere, not the county most at risk from their new sponsor's business.

I not sure why Alaphilippe was such a nailed on favourite like I would never fancy Sagan or GvA for the race. It is more the climber's monument. Good to see Quickstep fall short on this one.
