I rode into the a parked car in May - went through the back window and needed 50 stitches on my neck
'Tis but a scratch

Wow, Cookson was annihilated! http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/david-lappartient-elected-uci-president/

Not enough brown envelopes? Association (perceived or otherwise) with the British Cycling machine and Brailsford?
-
• #14007
You're right, that was a deliberately incendiary comment.
I'm just very fucked off with how incredibly complacent British cycling seems to be about the crash. Even the usual voices of boardman and millar were silent. Of course you cannot make cycling safe, but you can be a good coach and stop an impressionable young athelete from potentially causing lasting damage to herself.

• #14008
You mean the same David Millar who climbed off on the Angliru because it was steep?
-
• #14009
Does this mean the smaller teams decision will be reversed?
-
• #14010
Yeah I was extremely lucky not to die tbh
-
• #14011
No I mean the reformed david millar that is supposed to be a young rider mentor
Definety not the fashion designer david millar
-
• #14012
That's not actually what happened. He crashed on the descent before the Angliru, which they knew would be dangerous beforehand and he was protesting that. Not that anyone noticed.
There was a great km 0 from the Cycling Podcast on this during the Vuelta.
-
• #14013
That's a beating in anyone's language.
I'm really not sure it's for the best though, Laparrtient has done nothing for women's cycling whilst in charge at the French Federation and the sport really doesn't need ASO in an even more dominant position.
-
• #14014
I stand corrected.
I like the podcast but refused to pay to get KM0 given it was free at the other grand tours.
Either way - Millar is full of shit. I was amazed to see David Walsh leaning on Millar's judgement in this article...

So much for cookson having bought up the votes...
-
• #14016
He might be full of shit, but its eloquently put. At least he has the self awareness now to take the piss out of himself.
The story he tells was the Chechu Rubiera, long time Armstrong domestique, was from the area and knew the descent beforehand would be treacherous so was trying to organise a rider protest. Millar was up for it, but then when he crashed on a straight section of road, decided to do something. His injuries from the crash would have probably led to his abandon anyway, so he rode up the Angliru, getting pushed by fans for a lot of it, and abandoned shy of the line in protest. Except no one noticed.

I'm thinking it may be whole load of meh (except I hope myour mate keeps his job). I certainly don't think Cookson has fulfilled the promises when he beat McQuaid, but he was certainly moving in the right direction. However he was doing so much to the chagrin of many, Marc Madiot was scathing of him, accusing him of prioritising races like The Surrey Classic and other monied yet less traditional races over the more storied, continental ones. I certainly see this as a power shift back to mainland Europe and France, and traditional European racing. What it will mean for innovation, I doubt there will much, and there's a good chance the women's side will suffer. Instead I think there will be more luddism from the French, talk again of banning race radios and power meters.

The UCI needs root and branch reform, you can't govern sport through committees and vested interests.
Cookson gets criticised for his efforts here, but he tried at least.
Lappartient seems totally focused on pro men's road racing, but that's just a small part of what the UCI does. I wish him well, but one of his campaign promises was to immediately introduce stiffer penalties for motorised doping, which doesn't seem like a priority to me.
-
• #14020
Yes it does, but it won't happen. I do think the election of Lappartient mirrors the election of Infantino at FIFA: more of what came before, while Cookson wasn't there to service the vested interests of things like ASO. I also think the French are trying to circle the wagons to protect their races and others on the European calender. There was a lot of entrenched resistance to Cookson changing anything, so his presidency was hamstrung.
And the elephant in the room is that cunt McQuaid. He has been actively lobbying against Cookson and the rumours are he may get invited back into the UCI, which is a fucking disaster. Also Makarov (sp) was the power-broker for Cookson, and by and large he seems to have abandoned him.

There's not really any ambiguity in motor doping. No messed up samples, no TUEs. If you have a fucking motor in your bike or any of your spare bikes you should never race again, unless it's onboard a fucking Honda in the 250cc F1GP...
I still want life bans for doping though.
-
• #14022
I agree in principle, but the difficulty is that the list of 'banned' substances changes over time due to a wide range of factors.
What about caffeine? It was banned but is now actively endorsed. And what about substances that everyone is using now, but cannot be detected, or indeed isn't even tested for? How long should blood samples be kept before retroactive bans are timed out?
Agreed motorised bikes can fuck right off
-
• #14023
What about it? If you fail a drug test for whatever is banned you are banned for life.
Caffeine isn't banned now it is merely monitored so that's a non-issue.
There's always scope for putting a case forward with drug tests so if your excuse is good enough then fair play you get off. Anyone with EPO or any shit like that in their blood is perma banned. Simples.
Samples should be held as long as they can and retroactive life bans enforced.
After a generation of people losing their medals, losing their jobs, maybe then no fucker will risk cheating...
-
• #14024
and I will win Le Tour like I should've done a few years ago if it wasn't for all those fucking cheats...
-
• #14025
I agree. But how many proven cases of it have we had?
There's lot of bullshit rumours, mainly stoked by that Hungarian bloke, but very little real evidence of it being widespread.
Where might one find the profile of the elite mens race? TIA
