Selle SMP discussion

  • I've always suffered after long rides before, to the point I can't even sit and spin on a turbo even 24hrs from the end of a ride.

Now, that just isn't an issue.

  • Some SMP models on sale at Pro bikefit at the moment

  • Recently my GF bought an SMP TRK ladies saddle, but the measurements on CRC were wrong, its probably the widest saddle I've ever seen. Doesn't really work for her as its for a road bike and she's fairly canted over on it, whereas the TRK is more suited for trekking/touring commuting duties in terms of flex (?).

I noticed the non ladies SMP TRK saddle looks narrower, but online measurements can't be trusted. Anyone able to confirm the standard saddle is narrower and are you using it on a road bike?

Or any other ladies specific road saddles out there that don't break the bank, £50 glass ceiling budget. She doesn't do mega long days in the saddle and is unlikely to, more like 1.5-4hr.

According to Bontrager/Spesh machine she is about 147mm

  • get the SMP Extra, I believe this is the model she was aiming for.

TRK is for the serious uprighter.

  • Most of the saddles are measured on the Steve Hogg page I think

  • just recieved a Sllele SNP crabon from our industrious Eastern brethern on t'fleaBay.

Apart from being 130mm instead of the declared 145mm wide, it's a strange but hopefully comfortable change to my dear old crotchal region...

Re: moral dilemma. I've been trying to shop a second hand one I can afford for several months, with no joy, and the RRP means that there is no dilemma on buying new. Otherwise, the real dilemma is whether I'm getting broken carbon wedged up my anus on a future ride... hopefully I'm just avoiding suffocating my penis on long rides and all that jazz.

I also wanted the long rails to save me getting a shorter stem as anything less than 90mm is anti in my book, and I quite like the shape of the SMP in addition to its promised goochal benefits. It's either as flaccid as an 80 year old reminiscing over getting his end away for the first time or it's as sleek and kinetic as a hungry panther. Or it's just a fucking curvy carbon saddle with a big hole to pop your balls through and cool them off in summer. Rapha design team, are you listening? We want an SMP compatible zipper down there to free the barrel bombs mid-flight!

Anyway. Where was I? Oh yes, my first conquest... she was a fine young filly, American you see...

  • E-bay Germany comes up with a lot of used Selle SMP and quite a few sellers post. Ensure they take Paypal, in Germany it's not mandatory to take it. Perhaps an option? I've seen Crabon ones there.

CSB: My dads LBS owner called saddle with a cutout "ones with free ballbag airco". My dad had to try not to LOL. I'll give him my old Selle SMP TRK once I have another used pro, as he ended up having to try 8 saddles and ended up with mums old saddle.

The dropped nose is actually quite good for riding out of the saddle, gives the legs something to hold against so the bike doesn't flop about as much :)

    :P

  • SMP - beaked nose stop flopping.

  • But I'm pretty sure this one's fake:

100% identical to my Chinese one, or are the Chinese really that good?

  • Fake problem applies to German eBay too I guess...

I have seen genuine ones too. I have to admit I'm going for the leather ones, these seems less popular to fake.

Perhaps sells SMP has clear guidelines on spotting fakes? Everyone can do a "made in Italy" ribbon... :)

Edit a search shows up nothing...I guess if its second hand you have to trust seller they bought it in a shop and not on t'internet...

My bike doesn't flop. It gets torqued in an effective and highly skilled manner thank you.

  • Best not to buy a fake Carbon saddle then...you might torque it into parts...

    ;)

Considering trying a used Evolution. Should work too according to Steve Hoggs article. Happy with the Pro, but I like the idea of the raised end profile on the Evo.

    ?

It's used, now to be sure it's not a knock-off you need to trust the seller...SMP really need to implement better security imho!

  • Man has like-new €300 saddle

Sells for €85 or best offer.

I'd be surprised if it's not fake tbh! Experience of trading with Italians shows they are pretty canny at getting a good price for their wares so...

  • Ah, another fake then. I already tried to weed out the too cheap sellers... why not go for a leather one?

You have to watch the Italians, but sometimes a bargain comes up. I've gotten a use Strike Plus (the pro in old name) there.

That also taught me getting very old saddles isn't a good idea, it seems after a couple of years even the best saddles get some sag in the foam. It's still useable and comfy, but I wouldn't go for very old second hand (over say 2 years) anymore.

  • Are there fakes around for around the price of the cheapo real models? I'm looking for something <£40 ideally

  • Let me (us) know how you get on with the saddle. I'm thinking about getting one. I'd be interested to know your thoughts. Kindly include any diagrams of balls through slots. Thx.

  • @alialias I got mine for £30 shipping included on ebay... there was many to choose from all around the same price.

    @Itisaboutthebike

First inspection is that it's pretty solid-a tiny amount of flex in the body as you'd expect/want and the single-piece carbon rail has no visible defects in the mould so I'm hoping there's nothing catastrophic awaiting, unlike the time I got low-profile Planet X carbon rims and found metal shards embedded in the resin, on the tub bed no less... they were sent back asap. i've been bouncing up and down on it seated on teh turbo and it's not making any funny noises either, or giving any concerns, but I guess hitting a pothole at speed can't be simulated at home.

The balls are popping through nicely, with a gentle and sensual tugging action when rocking in the saddle and a more exuberant yank when rising out of it and the jimmies are released, which is what I suspect you all wanted to know. The cooling action can't be overstated as it keeps them at a comfortable temperature with a soothing breeze replacing the cloistered and muggy atmospherics of your chamois. For aesthetic reasons I'd recommend shaving your plumbs-especially if you have sponsors logos to affix-otherwise rocking a hairy mary is at your discretion and may help with wicking the sweat away from your spicily embrocated anus and giving yourself a tingling starfish.

In other technical considerations, it's a very hard saddle, but not uncomfy, and very slidy so it's a good thing there's a slight curve towards the rear of it or you might slide off when seated and going uphill, especially with the slipstream from those hairy sweaty orbs lubricating your ass.

Once I'm free of academic obligations I'll let you know if the saddle disintigrates mid-ride and simultaneously performs both a castration and cleaving of the sphincter, as well as other in-ride data which reveals itself. With insightful and considered reviews such as these I still don't understand why I haven't been offered a job at Which? or at least road.cc...

  • #rep :)

I'm tempted to write a female one in style, but quite frankly I don't think I can beat yours... :)

    (that sponsor logos line...esp. brilliant)

  • I have been riding with my smp however I have realised that I am getting chafing on the right hand side. I also noticed that I sit more to the left. Should I move the saddle to the left to compensate?

  • Very very slightly, I notice this more on the carbon saddle which is more obvious to the slight change in position.

  • I had the same thing. It confused the hell out of me TBH.

My advice would be ride without rotating the saddle for a few weeks and see what happens. I found it's actually altered my pedals stroke, the chaffling has gone.

I think it's a saddle that really exposes asymmetries.

  • Ok will give it a go and see how I get on.

  • #rep :)

    Post 194. Very funny.
