Do things like the 5 hour energy shots actually give you 5 hours of usable energy, or just the feeling of being alert and 'energised' for 5 hours?

No, but to be honest, by the time I was using them, my mouth had basically rotted from all the sugar/corn syrup and 40ºC dry heat. The 5 hour energy shots got me across New Mexico on about 6 hours sleep. Trippy.

I do wonder if there is anything that can be done about rotten mouth. I heard someone suggest chewing raw garlic.

I think (hope) it'll be a while before it goes. I don't think there is anyone currently racing ultra MTB races that's good enough to take it.

I'd be interested to see whether Chris Plesko could be any faster with gears. His single speed time last year was very fast and he's still relatively young too.

With the new route in Canada adding on average 12 hours to the route, it's gonna be tough. I also hope Mike's record sticks. Something special about seeing him on Trackleaders ahead of the pack, in spirit at least.

His previous record was fast, but last year he was crazy fast. I can see that record standing for a long time! :)

His previous record wasn't a record, fire in the Polvadera Mesa, long diversion missing one of the toughest parts of the whole route... It was still crazy fast though

I'd like to see Josh Ibbett have a go, I keep pestering him about it. I think he could do it, with a few years experiance.
