How much shorter does that make the route?
-

Circa 400km

Not a huge dent in the overall scale of the thing then but can't be a potential 'record' year with an altered route.
-
• #1008
Getting to the start will be half the fun, if it's south of border.

Need a Covid negative test: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/ea/covid-testing-required-us-entry.html
and I wonder if there are any state border restrictions on the route?

Followed a guy on YT doing it late last year and he got as far as New Mexico before he got picked up. Starting at Canadian boarder also. But US cases are dropping in line with ours / vaccinations so this might go ahead - could be a field full of 40+ people though :)

"This is my entire Great Divide bike-packing experience from summer 2020. I started the ride on July 15th and rode for 26 days to southern Colorado. "Must be, he started outside Canada and then New Mexico started a 14-day quarantine thing, so he stopped his ride at the end of Colorado.

They started last night, Jay Petervary is in the top 3. I hadn't seen him in the pre-race lists. I guess he just turns up. The other names I don't know apart from Sarah Swallow. Edit: Jay was in the list I'm an idiot.

Anyone doing on the ground commentary? What's the weather like?

The Facebook group is pretty quiet until something happens. Looked nice when they set off. One main difference is that they are going border to border rather than starting in Canada because of Covid.

Top 3 getting a decent gap (text from FB group):
Brendan Heinig, 36, Boulder CO. His first attempt was back in 2015 and he's glad to be back.
Jay Petervary, The Legend, 48 of Victor Idaho. TDR #7!
Kire (Erik) Nilhon, 43, born in Sweden living in San Fran, CA. He is a Rookie this year. And he didn't even reconnaissance the trail.

Hah Kire Nilhon is Erik Nohlin, who works for specialized and has mostly done road stuff in the past.
Based on the photos of his set up, let’s hope he doesn’t find mud because the clearances are minimal!

lol, good spot! I'll edit.

I had to think too much about what you did there 😂
Who think this will go ahead this year? Sorely tempted to ride it, perhaps not race and perhaps starting a month or so later, but if the race goes ahead a good indicator of whether it’s OK or not.
