Average speed during fall was 42.03 km/h.
Maybe the fellas sliding down the road. So many sticky bedsheets tonight!
I'm really happy to see Purito win, he seems to have had such poor luck in GTs since forever.
Also... Dan Martin 4th today. Yates 8th. Come on Tim!

The mechanic vid.. Incredible footage. How Matthews, Impey, TenDam, Cancellara and others finished the stage after that beggars belief..

Degenkolb said on Lemond on Tour that Bonnet was 'right on his wheel' when he (Bonnet) crashed. Degs was watching the replay for the first time..

^^^^ If you read Charlie Wegelius' book, these heroic efforts are a lot less, well, heroic, and a lot more about keeping your job. The 'what did you do this year? Oh, you abandoned the Tour?' approach from the management when contracts are up. It's really one of the very best books about the reality of being a pro, especially a domestique.

other sports have strict rules on concussion and cycling should too. If the decision to carry on is taken out of the cyclists hands it will surely protect them.

Brailsford said there was no plan to get Froome in yellow and he's happy to lose it.
Not sure there's anybody close enough to do it for the next few days. Suppose TvG could have a dig today but I reckon Sky might have it until the TTT.
Apparently Tony Martin doesn't like cobbles. Stybar could have a go maybe.

There's loads of gratuitous snaps of the pile up on the guardian website. Seems pretty bad taste IMO

We don't (the public at large) protest at seeing the wreckage of car crashes in the papers or burnt out houses where people have died.
Not sure its worth getting precious about. Sure there are some horrible pics of Wouter Weylandt's death that didn't get printed. I'm not going to google to check.
Jonny Hoogerland - everyone was happy to share those pictures even though he could quite easily have been killed.

Yeh, you have a point. I'm not getting my knickers in a massive twist about it or anything, i just think it's a bit unnecessary. The amount of pics of the crash as opposed to the fantastic finish up the mur is very unbalanced.

No neurological damage says FDJ. Lets hope that is true and the surgery to stabilise Bonnet's spine goes well today. From memory the C2 vertebra is the same vertebra that left Christopher Reeve quadraplegic for life. Very scary stuff.

Media always panders to the lowest common denominator, even the Guardian.
And I say that as a journalist.

Matthews confirms it was an 80km/h initial crash

Bonnet looked fucked. Think he was the first one to go down loosing the front wheel, or that could have been another FDJ rider...

His words: 'A race commissioner put a vest around my shoulders and told me 'you're out' but I protested and said 'pop my shoulder back in please, I've not trained this hard to quit this close to home''

That is epic. I hear what people are saying about it being there job etc, it still doesn't make them any less impressive.

re. Froome in yellow - i reckon he wanted to give himself a bit of leeway for today's stage. He loses a minute over the cobbles, which is quite possible, and he's only 20secs or so down on Bertie, and still up on Nibbles and Quintana. Plus the added support of having the team car up front etc, and people being less likely to attack the yellow if there's a mechanical.
Also I think the weather might be a bit shit today, did I see someone tweeting about that? Yellow is a more weatherproof colour than black, that's a scientific fact. -

I know people have their opinion about the new madone, but whilst I was watch them ride in the peloton, I really do like how neat the bike looks without any cables head on.
