    Dunwich Dynamo XXIII
    4 - 5 July 2015

The Dunwich Dynamo is a 200 km night ride from London to the lost city of Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast. From 1992 to 1998 it ran as commercial pay-to-enter event. In 1999 it became a free, traditional event; something like Christmas but with less eating and more travelling by bike. This successful format has continued since 2000.

Setting a date for an informal 'turn-up-and-ride' event - on the Saturday night nearest a full moon in July - maintains the most important element of the great festival of frivolity, the company of other riders.

Might as well start a thread a year in advance. :)

  • List?

    1. MuleManning
  • lol well I do plan to

  • 200k is somewhat of an exaggeration if you just ride from PotP to Dunwich though!

  • Booooooooked x 2!

  • Walthamstow > London Fields > Dunwich / Bermondsey > Walthamstow is about 200km, so I'm accepting that

  • Fair enough! I got a 'private' coach last year which dropped us off at stratford, which helped immensely with the final leg!

  • I definitely want to do this again, anybody on here planning to do it and ride back?

  • I am doing bag and BBQ duties again.

So if you want some gear* to meet you at the beach, get in touch closer to the date (Will park-up around 04:00/05:00).

    *Spare clothes, food, accordions, etc.

  • I'll see how Deal goes beforehand. But with the right weather I'd consider it.

  • Train restrictions here

    Sunday 5th July

Bikes will be prohibited on the following routes: Lowestoft - Ipswich, Lowestoft - Norwich.

Bikes will be restricted to a maximum of 4 on the following rural routes: Ipswich - Cambridge, Norwich - Cambridge. Only 8 bikes can be carried between Norwich and Ipswich.

Intercity services starting from Ipswich travelling to Colchester/Chelmsford/Stratford/London will carry a maximum of 50 bikes per train only and must be reserved in advance - a free bike ticket will be generated and this must be presented before boarding.

  • typical, the first year that I was going to get the train back.

  • well 50 bikes per train sounds rather generous on a service that normally takes 8, just make sure to book up now!

  • Book in advance and ask for a bike pass at the time of booking. I booked 3PM from ipswich with a bike back to London and had no issues. They even ushered me on to an earlier train as I was making the place look untidy.

  • Will definitely book!

  • Later is much better, only 1 other bike on my carriage.

  • yea, time for a bit of sleep too.

  • Awesome photo.

Makes me glad I didn't consider the train the one time I did the Dun Run.

  • isn't it, not mine.
reckon you could fit a few more bikes in there, bit like my flat.

  • So no bikes at all allowed on train from Darsham to Ipswich? That sucks. Special service on that route was perfect last year - whole carriage for bikes and another for cyclists, friendly staff on the platform. Now: prohibited.

  • I think the train contract has changed hands in the last 6 months or so, and it could just be a default response. Might be worth trying to organise people to write to the new operators to make them reconsider

  • Might finally get around to doing this.

  • Was lots of fun - even with iffy weather last year

I stopped for a couple of hours with the in-laws and got a train back about 4pm from Ipswich, hardly any other bikes on the train.

Might go s/s rather than fixed this year, it wasn't hard but would have been nice to stretch out the legs after 6/7 hours

  • Has anyone managed to make a bike reservation for the Ipswich-London train? FAQ still says "Reservations are intended to go 'live' in early May" but no sign of it and company seems to know nothing about it.
