Look KG196: old crabon meets new

Latest project that's been on the back burner for a while now...

I picked up this blue Look KG196 frame after a bit of textbook drunk ebaying. I've got a fair few components in the parts bin which I thought I was going to be able to use, though I think I might attack it properly and dress it up with new stuff (though if I can use some existing bits, all the better).

The Look KG196 is one of my favourite frames (eva) though most of them on a google image search, frankly, look shite. I think this Velo Ciao example (with spinergys and red contacts) was a standout example of what one can look like with a bit of thought (and dollar).

Essentially though I think the silver period correct stuff looks shit next to the crabon goodness of the frame, and my plan is to dress the frame with nice (well, not nice relative to the classic campag stuff ofc, but for this project...) carbon everything.

The original idea was to stick di2 on it, though it was always going to look a little out of place owing to using Shimano gear (not normally a problem, though Look IS so classiccy European it would alwyas be less preferable to Campag). and having to use a dummy cable outer for the (lack of) second gear cable on one of the sides (or just have the blank outer) wouldn't be too hot. Either way without a hell of a lot of work, getting one di2 cable down the liner of the frame isn't happening. So were going cables, which allows me to go for a funky nicer carbonier Campag number.

I'm an unashamedly whopping fan of matchy matchy everything (materials and colours/logos), and as few different brand names as possible. Of the logos I do want to see, there's little reason not to go with Frenchy stuff if I can (Basically Corima and Mavic I'm looking at you here) (though no, not a Mavic groupset...). So to finish the bike, I need to make some decisions based on what's available for what part (e.g. 25mm seatposts can>>>>>), tho will be slightly restricted by hopefully finding components that fit from as few brand sources as possible. If I can't find a part that fits with the correct brand, as it's carbon, I'll just get an unbranded carbon version from aliexpress or wherever (and maybe get busy with some stickers...). The colours of the frame (bold blue with red/yellow/grey) accents would be great to get flashes of on the trim (eg the red bits on Campag Centaur or Record would be a nice touch, and Mavic/Corima yellow bits would also look swish.)

Thoughts on overall, erm, look of the finishing kit boil down to 3 choices: Full 3k (basically the 'classic' carbon appearance) carbon weave (would fit in ith the 'shit it's the 90's and we've just discovered carbon'), 3k carbon weave with Aluminium trim (probably the easiest to find matching bits for - as appealing though?), UD (i.e. plain) carbon (and therefore bringing in black aluminium for any finishing kit (I have UD matte wheels I could nick from my CX spare wheels)). Played these finishings out a fair bit in my head and none of them have every part in that finish (for a reasonable price), though have noted some thoughts out loud on the various bits required to complete here...

Stem - At risk of alienating myself, I'm going to put it out there: Ergostems are shit. They look like you've just robbed Cyclefit and are a whopping unnecessary faff. The 196 is made for one (figuratively and literally) so I'll probably begrudgingly keep it, though if I can't find a 31.8 example I may see if I can fit a different stem. The one as on the bike as it is is the unbranded silver aluminium one (for 25.4 or so diameter handlebars), so it loses out if I want to go for the full 3k or UD carbon (i.e. as little silver alumiunium as possible) look, AND I'll have to use piddly handlebars (which won't be all bladey and aeroey like the rest of the bike, AND have that "swallowed a worm" look when I run the cables under the bartape. There is an alternative solution of a pikey adjustable stem that can (might be able to, dimensions of bits tbc) be attached to the front bit of the ergostem, though that would be an anachornism unless it was more square than the normal round shape.

Seatpost - Another small bone of contention - even the native ergo seatpost (that's on all 196's) on the frame doesn't really sit well with me - it's a round 25mm hole that rises up to a normalish looking bladed seatpost, but the seat clamp area is huge and looks like you've used a tonne of shims to use the specific look seatpost. There is another solution in a Corima ellipse seatpost that looks a little better though they're tough to find (unless the one as sold here http://www.lfgss.com/thread118470.html becomes available again? TM?...hma???). Both those options allow an overall colourway of 3k carbon (with silver alu finishings), which may then get the nod ahead of the UD/Black alloy.

Groupset - Record or Centaur. If only because they have red flashy bits, and gives me a nice hi or low ball gs to think about depending on how deep $$$ wise I want too go.

Wheels - I have in the parts bin, a 3k 45mm rim with an alu braking surface which I was hoping to use (and would look ok with the 3k carbon groupsets above), though the HHSB part of my persona would also wonder about carbon 4 spokes (and maybe a disc...). Or I could get new full (regular spoked) carbon wheels (I've never been a fan of the atstetics of a alu braking surface) for a few hundred off aliexpress (and they may find a Corima or Mavic sticker on the way...)

That's about it for now, plenty of thinking to be done. If anyone knows of someone with carbon campag Record (or Centaur Red/Black) that's not needed anymore do let me know!

  • wants di2
    wants 31.8
wants groupset to have flashy red bits
    3k obsesseda
    dislikes look ergostem
    dislikes look ergopost

  • I want to hate you, but it is just jealousy over this frame.

  • Awsome frame colour you've got there! Maybe look on aliexpress for some 60mm stealth black decal mavics (fake as but look good) for wheels.

  • Would you be interested in a 10 speed carbon Record chainset? I have one for sale, though it doesn't have any red on it. A good thing IMHO

Yup...Fingers been hovering over the buy button on pretty much those.

  • or the 5 spoke moody mavic track copies...

    noooooooooooooooooo

  • this needs a corima 4spoke at the front and a disk for the back..

i do not have any seatposts for sellz but would vote for an ellipse. as for the stem: get a 31.8 ergostem (they still sell those) and swap the head. you can then sell the regular quill one on ebay in 3 hours like i did 2 days ago (fixed price, us buyer..)

great frame/project and please keep this picture+description heavy!

Where (is an 31.8 ergostem availble)? It's a huge missing link to the whole project!

Ellipse seatpost is already on the way.

Corima is definitely an option (they do clinchers I believe, which is a bonus), though spent too long staring at Look carbon track bikes super porn with Mavics.

  • well i could have sworn that they still make these:

the only image i could find is this one (from lfgss bbb thread). this is a 2013 model but it's nowhere to be found :S

(it is in the catalogue.. http://www.lookcycle.com/media/catalog/product/c/a/catalogue_look_2013_en.pdf )

  • Right, been quite the delay on updating this, largely owing to the delay in finding a 31.8mm ergostem (without shelling out a whopping amount of money), as a fair bit relies on this bit. But after months of having google search updates, I was hot on one from my new bessie Bernd from Austria.

So I'm quite set on the look of the thing, and essentially I have come to realise my muse is 'The' Look track bike !

Now I've got confirmation I can get 'proper' (31.8m) bars, I'll be going for these:

...as the closest possible representation of these (the Look track bars)...

...especially as I learn I can get them from a factory in pure unstickered 3k weave goodness

Still singing the opening lines to Bump and Grind on the 5 spoke carbon wheels (mind=no, body=yes, or something...) I don't want to hurt anybody(s eyes), but there's something I must confess...I think a pair of Mavic/BLB Notorious/Chinese copy 5 spoke wheels will look nice. A full disc at the rear might be a bit much for the commute down the Embankment raceway though not leaving it out of scope for a future development...

  • don't go for a pair of 5s. too much. disc or deep at the back and 5 on the front.

  • Ummed and arred about this all week, and got in from the club this morning and pressed the buy button. I got me a (real, ex display model) Comete!

So now I want the 5 spoke at the front, however the IO (that's the (little bit iconic) wheel in the track picks above) is only available in track (so no braking surface). Oh, and it's silly money (£2.5kish).

So...I'm so close to the disc/5 spoke look, I'm still gunning for it. Back to my budget friends on Aliexpress, you can get Road versions of that are similar to the IO (actually copies of the FWD 5 spoke, though to the naked eye...). I can get it and either
    1.Leave it black
2.Leave it black but with Mavic tyres that carry the logo (and mavic skewers)
3.Stick Mavic decals on (the blank wheel)
4.Get the guys to put on the decals at source (then clear coat) (apparently they can do this and I can check it before it's sent)

I'm erring towards option 2 or 4 - 4 might cheapen the build, whereas 2 has the feeling of "well I'm not actually lying..."

  • Man that is sexy!!!!!!!!! I went for a Corima 4 spoke from 03 for my rear

    Andy

  • Whoah, this is right up my strasse!
Is it 1" threadless and why do you need to stay ergostem? If so, why not a shim out to 1 1/8" or have I got the wrong impression of how the stem/steerer tube etc all connect on this? Looks like you've got a decent build budget. Will be watching with interest.

  • It's a propriety stem system that requires an Ergostem - I thought it was going to be a threaded one too (was one of a few surprises) and that I could have used a 'normal' stem, though tbh with the passing of time I've 180'd on my ergostem antipathy and managed to pick one up (expensive though it was).

Also picked up this years Record group in decent nick for a decent price.

Main decisions now are saddle, pedals, and bar tape trim (the actual bar tape wias due to be carbon effect stuff, though with yellow bar end plugs and tape (taped at the join cross bar to drop)

Saddle wise, I was going to consider this which would match the seatpost - though it's pretty expensive for what it is, not looking particularly comfy, and talk of 85kg weight limits scare me.

PEdals...Half of me really wants these
    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/210918/

Though they're pretty rare in decent enough nick and I haven't looked into compatibility issues(?). Blue or red or yellow normal/current Look keo pedals would suffice, but I hate the modern Look logo (there is one Look TT frame LOOK 596 MONDRIAN that's the tits and has the new Look logo and the only pass I'll give it!)

  • Pedals - The new Keo Blade 2's would look amazing with this. Not sure those 206 pedals would work with this, but judging by the parts you have got for this already, you have great taste so if you think they will, then go for it!

  • lets see a proper picture of the frame!!

  • Right, saddle sorted (Corima, as pictured above)

Pedals are down to these 2:

    or

  • I'd go for the modern ones, unless the blue is a perfect match to the frame colour.

  • I'd go for the modern pedals myself.
    Found yourself a seatpost yet?
I received an Ellipse in the post today for my 121 build. :)
As +getoutofbed said, let's see some decent pics of the frame :)

  • I have those blue ones used (I think). Let me know if you want pics - I'm guessing your looking for new old stock though.

  • I vote modern too.
