  • I don't know your housemates girlfriend, and I'm nervous about making gender stereotypes. But is this bike indulging your 90's mountain bike passions rather than the most appropriate/ pretty bike you could build (for the stereotyped girly girl who likes flowers, pink and tassles on her handlebars).

  • That look pretty awesome, the mudguard will fill the clearance nicely.

  • She wanted a reasonably lightweight, bombproof commuter for Edinburgh with provisions for mudguard and rack, decent standover and without drop bars. She's been involved throughout the whole process. She picked the frame and went over bar choice with me. And she adores it. Only the XTR was my minor indulgence, because it was practically the same price as modern mid-range stuff, except it's probably better engineered, I doubt you can get better canti brake levers and no doubt it's way better looking.

  • Yep, SKS bluemels. Waiting to swap the forks

  • Good good - looks like it's going to be great.

  • Looks great!

  • Finished off yesterday and delivered! SKS mudguards are a pain in the arse to install. And had to improvise with a long bolt and using a recessed brake nut as a spacer as there's no chainstay bridge. Plus gave a quick spray of clearcoat to protect the bare fork bits.

  • Need to mount the mudguard from the front onto the back of the fork crown, otherwise wet cold feet and dirty drivetrain.

  • I tried, but it was a pain to attach and made the front of the guard sit really high. Better to stick on a flap

  • It looks great. Are these the SKS chromoplastic or Bluemels? 60 or 65mm? I'm thinking of getting some and they kind of look similar apart from the price.

  • 60mm Bluemels. I will confess to not knowing the difference between any of SKS's differently named offerings

  • Thanks, me neither.

  • SJS sell some rather large flap, proper German one at that.

  • Great build, though edinbugger bike thieves know their vintage mtb so make sure she has a proper lock and wheel locks.
