Sorry for hijacking thread but.... need advice on wether my amp will be repairable:
Pains me to say it but theres now no sound coming from the left channel on my Moon i-5
I had unplugged my speakers to test an unused set before selling them.
Went to play music today and there was no sound. I realised I'd forgot to plug the speakers back in. Plugged them back in but theres now no sound from the left channel.I'm wondering if the act of switching on the amp with no speakers attached to the cables has damaged the amp in someway? Cables were lying on the carpet. not sure if they were touching at the contacts or not.
Is this likely repairable? First time I've ever had a problem like this. No idea if its an easy fix or now an expensive paper weight.
I'm absolutely gutted. Love the amp more than my wife and bikes. -

plugging it in with no speakers won't do a solid state amplifier any damage at all. Chances are the speaker cables shorted together, open the amp up and look for glass fuses somewhere, it should have them. I bet one has blown and thats why you're not getting any sound.

actually just had a look online and it seems as though the i5 doesn't contain a speaker protection fuse, bummer. Any burning smell? Probably blown the output transistors so it needs a tech to look at it.

Thanks dude, confusingly there were two moon amps with virtually the same name the older I-5 which I have and a more recent i5.
This is the one I've got https://www.stereophile.com/integratedamps/620/index.htmlTook it to a guy who does work for the moon distributor and got this email, "Unit has been inspected and requires following to be replaced in Left Channel
Audio Pre-Amp, Driver and Output Transistors plus Emitter Resistors, Safety Resistors and Feed Resistors. [ Transistors Short Circuit, Resistors Open-Circuit ].Cost of Repair - £172.00"
No idea if that price is good or not but I'd told my self I'd be happy if it cost less than 200 to fix.
I don't think speakers are damaged. At least I fucking hope not. Switched cables at amp to eliminate it being speakers and it proved it was left channel.
Are speakers likely to be damaged? I think that the contacts of the speakers were touching each other unbeknownst to me when I powered up the amp. -

try the speaker on the working channel, if it sounds good then you're fine, speakers are hard to kill generally. 170 is a good price for that, realistically it's about 2 hours work max and maybe 20 quid in parts but you're paying for the labour which is never cheap.
-
• #1166
Yeah I'm happy with the price.
I figured parts listed realistically couldn't cost much but at the end of the day the guys got to make a living.
For anyone in Glasgow who needs a hifi repair this is the guy: http://www.jslhifi.co.uk/History.html
Seems to have a wealth of experience and does the repairs for the high end audio shops in Glasgow. Recommended. -

Interesting.
I have an old amp and noticed one of the channels is getting a bit flakey - twisting the Balance seems to bring it back but it's not a great solution. Wondering though if there are any 'smaller than normal hifi' form factor amps out there? I know you can get modern D-Class amps that are quite small. I don't need any special features, just a few inputs and a volume control. It'd basically be for PC audio and my CDJs on the rare occasion I actually mess about with them.
Something like this: http://www.audioaffair.co.uk/emotiva-basx-a-100-integrated-amplifier but probably needs more than one input (it'd need at least one from the PC and one from the mixer since I don't want to run my PC through the mixer).
