  • As the title suggests, I'm building a straggler.

The reason i'm doing it is that I have to get rid of bikes. so i'm exchanging 3 for 1. the Straggler is going to cover road bike, commuter and tourer duties.
Most of the bits will come from my old road bike. and that had 9 speed ultra and a few nice bits. deda carbon seat post, Selle anatomica. Velo Orange porteur rack (I like luggage on the front).
I'm going to use Knesis crosslight cx wheels as they're nice and light and panaracer paselas.

    Thats about it really.

  • Reckon that sound great, would suggest spending a bit more time ensuring the brake is spot on, i.e. compressionless housing, TRP HY/RD or Spyre.

  • v nice, the paint is an interesting alternative to powder coat I'll be interested to hear how it holds up. I'd really like a 26" version of the straggler like the they do with the LHT and DT

  • Yep, i've got the Ogre with BB7's and compressionless housing and it took ages to really dial in but now they're excellent.
Do you think the other mechanical options are better?

paint looks nice, but i've scratched it already. only a tiny amount on the fork ends. so i'm slightly curious to see how it holds up.

  • They're better for one reason - they're dual sided actuated, rather than single like the BB7, instead of ensuring that the static side is as closed to the rotor as possible, all you need to do is loosen bolt, squeeze levers as hard as possible, then tighten bolt, volia, already set up.

I was really happy with the performance of the BB7, more than powerful enough, the only thing I dislike is merely the single sided actuation.

  • Here's the Ogre. it's a 200mm rotor up the front and if you throw the bike around a bit the rotor rubs sometimes. so I can imagine the double actuated callipers might have worked better for this.

  • If the rotor do rubs, it quite likely you need to true it (if you haven't already that is).

  • I think it's a bit of flex. either in the hub or the fork. the rotor is completely straight and it only happens when the bike cornering extremely hard.

  • Really tempted to get some of those Super Motos or a some Big Apples just for fun. Looking forward to seeing the Straggler built up!

  • I am selling V twin if you are keen

  • Nice but way out of my budget i'm afraid. thanks tho!
I've actually ordered the bb7's but maybe i'll send them back and get something else. it's all budget depending though.

    here's the rack

The Super Motos are fun. really really smooth.

  • I hope you have some spacers for that tiny headtube!

oh man! i used to have mono minis back in the day and i miss them so much! want discs

this is going to be a freaking sick bike. stoked on the rack and colour.

  • there must be half a kilos worth of braze ons on that frame.

  • Interesting project.

ha, yep! i've got a back problem so i've got to have the bars fairly high but i will of course be trimming some off when it's set up.

  • there must be half a kilos worth of braze ons on that frame.

Yes, as they say; you can do anything with a surly except build a light bike.

  • does anyone know of a good way to get the decals off the stem?

  • Acetone?

  • Doing the same thing with a cross check. Wet weather, 'vintage' and wall hanger are moving to become a cross check do it all. Should leave me with do it all, road and frack (if the York velodrome ever opens), with a cargo bike happening this summer as well hopefully.

Basically going for 6600 group off my wet weather bike but will possibly steal some other ideas off you.

    Yep, that worked. Ta.

Nice. it was my friends Crosscheck that started me thinking on all this.

Nice project - thanks for sharing. :)

Of course it's not all about the aesthetics...but that is a sweet frame colour!

Interesting you don't get on with rear racks/luggage. I've always found front ones much more destabilising.

    Read that as B-Twin. shudders

I do prefer rear racks for proper heavy weight touring. but i really like the convenience of having a bag on the front i can just chuck stuff in for round town.
I love the colour too. Charlie (the bikemonger) did offer it to me in black. but there is no competition!
