I was thinking of heading to Swinley to ride hire bikes with my girlfiend, but they've got no XL available today, and the chap is convinced I'd not fit on an L - opinions on that, people who rode with me at the weekend?

I am your height, ride XL/58cm road bikes but my Swift is a L as have been two previous mtbs.
Can't imagine you'll have any issues.

I'd say a Large would be fine for you, and probably more "chuckable"

"chuckable"
*Reaches for the 'banned badgers' list *

sorry, meant to say it might be more of a "gnarpoon"

Less bike fit, more low speed compression chat

Modern bikes are pretty long. You might be fine.
Only one way to find out.

Just wanted to add my thanks- was easily my favourite ride of the past year, totally and utterly beyond my expectations, and way harder than I expected. I’m still hurting today.
Would be keen to try it again some time.
Have been thinking about a gravel ride in Oxfordshire- inspired by white roads classic, which I mentioned briefly on the ride.
Anyway, thank you all especially @platypus for organisational magic, and it was great to catch up and meet you all. -

I tend to ride a 56cm road bike these days.

Other stuff has come up so I've moved my reservation at Swinley to this Saturday.

Me Julie and I spent a couple of hours at the Look Out today on a pair of these:
It was fun, mine was an L, for reference frame size fans.
I imagine that this is a fairly unremarkable "cycle to work" level MTB, what's equivalent that I might be able to pick up for buttons? It seemed to be all the bike I need/needed.

why not buy that if you like it?
-
• #844
It's a Marin, I have an historical antipathy to Marin.
-
• #845
And more seriously it's a 2018 frame, so there's unlikely to be any kicking around for cheaps yet I'd think.

Could do a lot worse than

or
https://www.evanscycles.com/specialized-camber-fsr-comp-29-2018-mountain-bike-EV306307
Both available in XL, which would be about right for you

Or this, if you want 1 x gears, a bit more travel, and a dropper post included.

Then get Matt to add some sick fadez

Thanks for the suggestions. The L I rode today felt fine - you think an XL would be better, or is a Specialised XL equivalent to a Marin L?

It's from 2017, so a tiny bit different, but I went with their size guide. Also the fact that I'd ride the XXL

You're about 6'2"/6'3", right?
Ah, I've got a 27.5 plus hardtail and it was lovely. Shows what the extra rubber adds in terms of comfort on a bikepacking set up. Either that or I've got a gooch of steal.
