Still going, past Pitlochry now.

They're further north than I ever got in training. Are they up or down on schedule?

608mi / 18.84mph

I think they are a fair bit up on the record at present.

Looks like 3rd time lucky and they might do it. It's such an annoying record with the reliance on the wind so vital.

Chewing the bars into a block headwind was the last report but still up on time. It would be difficult to give up now but thats why its a record ! An old one at that.

Seems to be in the bag, the gods of tandems permitting. Clearly they picked a perfect day in weather terms.
Still it puts the achievement of Swinden / Withers in perspective though.

50 year old record that some Olympians and some other big name TTers failed to crack. Decent effort. I'm not gonna bother now :)

The below (very brief) snippet suggests that the record was done on a £12 bike:

What's that in today's money though?

I'll have to get John's book out and have a read of the tandem section again...

About £195. Or £451, depending which measure you use. Still, we're talking cheap!

Now in Inverness.

Incidentally I think Swinden is the pilot, Withers the stoker. The story about the injections in that piece you linked to is just bonkers

11 hours to do 100 miles . Through the night but that road is very quiet up there. I just hope nothing breaks .

Proper awesome.

It's more like 9hrs to do 140 miles
