  • It's hard to beat rs80 50mm in terms of bang for buck. They are not fashionably wide though.

  • I would buy the flo30s and build them with brass nips (if you're using them throughout the year) and Sapim race or CX ray.

    +1

You've looked into them. They give you what want in terms of width and potential aero gains. They won't break the bank.

  • It's hard to beat rs80 50mm in terms of bang for buck. They are not fashionably wide though.

RS81-C50 is wider, and has tartier hubs, than RS80, plus it is 11s compatible so more future proof. On the other hand, they are £90 more than Zipp 30s and I'd put money on the Zipps being faster.

  • I get your comment on shape but with a 30 ish mm deep rim on an EVO frame surely the rim weight is the key rather than a heavy / reverse engineered version of another companies tech...Full carbon wheels offer a level of compliance to the ride anyway...Going up hill and accelerating overall wheel weight (specifically rim weight) is king.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove the doubt.

  • I think his point is that the EVO isn't exactly an aero frame, and so asking if the % of aero gains between toroidal / deep v is worth a weight penalty. Which sounds like a sensible question - I'm guessing the answer is need moar aeros (isn't it always?)

I would go for the Shimano's personally. I ride with someone who has a set of those Zipps twice a week and they have been nothing but trouble (though he's reluctant to admit that). They make a nice noise though.... when the skewers aren't creaking loud enough to drown out the wheels.

  • ^^ You only really need aeros if you are racing.. Handling, weight and durability are king if not.

Sorry for continually messing up your thread Morgan.

  • If you aren't racing what does weight have to do with it? Assuming you can have handling and durability regardless of heft / non-heft.

  • Would you take 150g penalty on a wheelset for marginal (newer aero tech) gains for a similar rim height? 30mm is not going to give any cross wind trouble and you still go up hills in the south east.

Each to their own but wheels are the one think you don't want to cheap out on.

  • well, light bikes/ wheels are generally nicer to ride (as long you don't take it too far to effect stiffness and blah blah blah) - whereas aerodynamic kit tends to have a direct impact on comfort and handling.

  • Fast wheels aren't good wheels for training. Training wheels aren't good for going fast.*

Everything in the middle is a shitty compromise even if you throw money at it.

  • I wonder if this thread will rival the Time Machine for most posts before final build?

    • you can go down the alloy/carbon deep clincher route. They're heavy but fine. A flo30 build would be much the same but perhaps easier to rebuild.
  • Flo30's seem to fit the bill of racing wheels that will be fine for now and aren't too expensive and will eventually become training wheels, like people are saying cat4's are rairly hilly, so the aeroozzz is more important, then when they become training wheels, use the motto: train heavy, race light

at least there's an actual bike in this one

  • You can get away with a mid depth wheel in the uk as a reasonable all rounder. light enough to be responsive up a hill but deep enough to offer some perceived aero benefit on the flat. Your right that they wont be the best at either end of the spectrum.

Im just querying the support for a mid depth but still quite heavy rim from an international source. Do flo have a uk distributor / warranty / support?

  • You'll get 'support' from whoever builds the wheel.

I don't even know what this means. Do you write copy for chinese carbon ebay outlets?

    ;-)

  • I'm sure they are vertically compliant but laterally stiff

  • Damn. I laughed and 'deducted reputation' by mistake.

    Sorry Howard.

Would be ironic considering im arguing against buying imported products with no recourse.

You supply an imported rim to a uk wheel builder and they crack, don't think you will get any help from them. they may charge you again to delace and ship them back if your lucky...

Hah you win the the prize for the first person to nerg me

    Awaits floods of nergs

Stop being negative, we're trying to get Mechamorgan to be the crash test dummy for Flo30s before we all decide whether to buy some ourselves.

  • Fair play... didn't get the memo!

most important question is are the graphics under the lacquer or not.

  • Will they barspin?
