  • Dear LPC,

Two days ago a card arrived with all the markings of a family & community I've been a part of over the last 4/5 years. I opened it straight away and have been trying to write a response and describe my reaction for how I felt ever since. All I can say is wow and thank you. I was truly blown away, from the image and the print quality to the messages and the mud it truly moved me.

I know I dropped off the scene at Christmas never quite explaining why but I feel like I'd like to explain what's happened as the love and support which has trickled through as people have picked up wee bits of info has been beyond fundamental in keeping me going.

Christmas Eve I was diagnosed win heart failure but over the following four weeks made a near full recovery. On the 2nd Feb I suddenly relapsed and after 24hrs in A&E was transferred here to Papworth for further tests. Over the following days some of my major organs failed and the decision was made to transplant my heart. People are on the waiting list for hearts for years as finding a donor depends on everything: blood group, height, weight, body shape, etc. so to keep me going I underwent surgery and was hooked upto vascular aid devices which replaced the pumping system of the heart. This system would have given me 3-4 months to find a donor, In which time I'd have been bed ridden in intensive care. I was kept asleep for two and a half days whilst these machines cleaned my blood and some complications were addressed. Incredibly half an hour before they decided to wake me up a perfect donor was found and after nearly 5 days asleep you can only imagine my suprise when Alice told me that there were not only no machines but I'd had a fully successful heart transplant! Test on me old heart show some scary shit and what should have happened compared to what has happened is really incredible.

The fantastic news is that my first biopsy results came back today showing 100% acceptance by my body of the new heart and the acceptance has been so good I have already entered such a natural rhythm I fall into a minute percentage of transplant patients who won't need back up pacemakers. Boo yeah!

I will probably remain an inpatient here until mid march. BUT I got the UK Champs in the diary and I really hope that I can get out and am strong enough to get down for the end of league celebrations.

Alice sends her love too and we'd like to take this opportunity to share that before all this happened we got engaged. Obviously there will be a fat party and obviously the LPC has an open invite. We will keep you updated.

From the bottom of my fresh mushy new ticker, thank you all.

    LPC love is serious shit.

  • Holy shit Aidan. Both amazing and terrifying story, pretty incredible end too.
