  • Praxis Works. I've had it for... hang on... *checks Strava... 9,876.3km, and nary a creak. Bearings still good too. Hmm, might double check those before the Alps appear though.

AFAIK, there's fuck all difference in stiffness between 30 and 24mm axles, especially when you're up at Ultegra/DA level. Though I'm sure Mr Tester is the better person to ask.

  • Tester; what do you think of the Miche Primato Syntesi hubs for a cheap, durable all-weather road wintertraining wheelset? And are there better alternatives if weather shows lots of rain, salted roads in the winter and dirt?

  • AFAIK, there's fuck all difference in stiffness between 30 and 24mm axles

Stiffness isn't the point. You can make a 15mm axle stiffer than a 24mm DA axle if you make it out of enough material :)

The goal is good enough stiffness at minimum weight, and having 30mm to play with and only needing to fill a 68mm shell, Cannondale could make their axles out of hollow aluminum rather than steel, reducing the system weight but keeping the stiffness where it needs to be.

  • You can make a 15mm axle stiffer than a 24mm DA axle if you make it out of enough material :)

Pretty sure you can't, solid 15mm rod is exceeded by a 24mm OD tube at quite a small wall thickness.

  • there's fuck all difference in stiffness between 30 and 24mm axles,

Probably true if you're comparing 24mm steel with 30mm aluminium. Both are so much stiffer than 16-17mm hollow steel square taper axles that any difference is a #marginalgain

  • @bashthebox I know it makes little difference to 99% of us here but this is worth a look https://fairwheelbikes.com/c/reviews-and-testing/road-bike-crank-testing/

  • My axle is steel. The weight difference was too little to warrant any thing else (Ti in Rotors case)

Praxis wont fit as there is a raised section in my shell.

I think the thread together in the centre is a nice system to live with.

My main question was regarding the angular contact bearings. If they are as solid as enduro claim. I may put them in both my BB and headset. Norway fecking hates beaings it seems.

  • That's really fucking weird, the first comment on that article is from a bloke with my name. Don't think I've ever come across another Seb Lloyd and yet there he is. I bet he's better at riding bikes than me too, the bastard.

Are bikes all going to go the way of BB30 then?

  • Are bikes all going to go the way of BB30 then?

Unfortunately, no. Cannondale can't even stick to it, they have a wider shell on the new Super Six Evo HiMod

  • Was there an answer to this?

  • Was there an answer to this?

Now you want answers already? That's what the AQA thread is for. FWIW, Ambrosio Zenith are the same price and have a better reputation.

  • Are bikes all going to go the way of BB30 then?

    Seemed likely to be BB86.

  • Seemed likely to be BB86

Seems very unlikely, 30mm axles are definitely the way forward, BB86 is utterly pointless.

Sadly, the lack of any common sense in the frame design world means that many so-called BB30 cranks are really BB386EVO plus a bunch of spacers, wasting the real benefit of a BB30 shell.

  • BB86 is utterly pointless

Glad my revulsion is somewhat validated.

73mm BB30a makes a bit of sense if you are after a wider shell on which to stick your split down tube and fat chainstays. Maybe.

  • Seems very unlikely, 30mm axles are definitely the way forward, BB86 is utterly pointless.

Shimano seemed to be insistent on staying with 24mm axles, so can't see BB86 going away anytime soon (neither the Trek propriety press fit BB).

  • Shimano seemed to be insistent on staying with 24mm axles, so can't see BB86 going away anytime soon

BB86 frames could fuck off today without inconveniencing anybody who wants to keep using 24mm axles, HT2 and GXP will happily sit inside BB30, BB30A, BBRight and 386EVO shells with appropriate adaptors.

  • FWIW, Ambrosio Zenith are the same price and have a better reputation.

    Thanks!

  • Continental Competition 25mm tubular tyres for long summer sportives and potential rainy weather too? (note: not an invitation for a tub vs clincher discussion).

  • I was looking at these (check tubs thread for further discussion).

I was thinking for my 'mountain wheels' which will see a lot of climbing. But also shite weather. So I wanted something kinda robust without being boat anchors. From what I read they are robust, handle very well in the wet, and last well. All while not being all that Heavy. I was put off by reports of slightly unforgiving sidewalls in the end.

  • Pretty sure that tubs on the road are not approved, whatever flavour. :(

  • If thats the case.

This thread is dead to me.

    Dead to me.

    Dead.

  • Tester disapproves:

I'd completely forgotten that there were some troglodytes out there still using sewn-up tyres.

    source

  • @Smallfurry - same use case here actually. It turns out that my wheels come with these pre-glued, so I shall find out for myself!

  • These Wheels are a little bit weird. Climbers With alu braking, and robust tyres. Bit of a mess. But both rims and Vittoria paves came in at very decent weight. So its actually working out.

I plan to hold an eye out for some Comps on offer in the meantime.

  • Mini track pump for having in the bike box that'll get up to 90-100psi without breaking me? Any suggestions?
