  • Are the Swiss allen keys attached with a magnetic holder?

All that beautiful carpentry and the allen keys stick out!? ;-)

Yup. They came in the holder in the picture. It has a very strong magnet in the back which is either stuck to the side of the toolbox or stuck to my workstand if i'm servicing the bikes. It's super handy.

  • Ha! Well I did reference the excellent work... and the thread is already pretty damp with all the gushing.

It's a really good idea, I was just wondering if I could do something similar with my allen keys.

How did you measure the dimensions and get the correct cutout size for the top tube?

    True.

I can't see it being too hard to make one yourself. Piece of wood + big magnet (+ glue) + drill to make each hole. An old wooden doorstop might be the easiest thing to make it out of as it's already the right shape to arrange the allens in size order.

How did you measure the dimensions and get the correct cutout size for the top tube?

Which cutout? The semi circle where it sits or the whole square that fits "inside" the frame?

The semi circle was just done by measuring the top tube of my bike at its widest point and adding 10mm to give it enough room to fit the neoprene strips in (which are 5mm deep).

    How does it work?

  • Fucked if I know.

  • Loving the shelves by the way.

  • That's not something I ever saw myself saying while in my 20's.

  • Looks great blah blah blah

Not sure which I'm more jeal of, your watches or your shelving... :)

  • That's not something I ever saw myself saying while in my 20's.

    You're screwed.

  • Cool Storage Bro

  • Along with the storage I also like the hex wrenches. Are these the ones http://www.pbswisstools.co.uk/catalog/PB_Swiss/KEY_L-WRENCHES_Rainbow.html ?

The reason I ask is I can't see any reference to a magnetic holder. There damn expensive, then I suppose any decent tool is.

  • Yup; they're the ones.

They changed the holder about 2 years ago (had mine for ages) but I believe it's still magnetic.

I might be wrong... you can still order mine here: http://www.pbswisstools.co.uk/catalog/PB_Swiss/PB_1212.L_RB.html

  • nice rack!

  • nice rack!

    Ha. Cheers murts.

    Excellent, cheers.

  • I'll be making my own version out of that king of materials- 18mm plywood.

Yes, I am significantly cheaper than Soul.

Oak veneered ply would look pretty nice.

  • Cool. Post some pics of how it goes.

I've had a couple of pm's asking if my friend would consider making more. I'm afraid that it's very unlikely... He spent nearly a month of lunchtimes etc perfecting this one and, even though I only paid for materials and a couple of pints, it was getting on for £400 for both.

I've posted my measurements etc so that people can either make them themselves or get their local friendly carpenter to help them out.

Happy to answer any other questions though...

Get him to make them flat packed out of veneered ply. Once he has made one surely the next should be pretty simple. He could cut them all up and post them out for individuals to assemble. IKEA style bike rack.

Might be a bit of money in it for him too.

  • I'm pretty sure he's okay with his normal job...

A lot of effort went into making these and I'm not sure he's into making things of lesser quality. Then there's the fact the peoples bikes are all different sizes in both width and height.

  • Beautiful I don't even need one and I want one :)

  • nice rack!

    Ha. Cheers murts.
I'm sure Murtle finds it a little irritating that you have racks for more than one bike, though.

  • Cool Storage Bro

    A+

  • Stupid question but is the wood all just glued?

This is a really inspirational build. I was looking to doing that Ikea pole myself as we've just moved.

  • Looks fantastic & yes walnut is not cheap
    I have wood envy now

  • Stupid question but is the wood all just glued?

Glued but with doweling to add rigidity.

  • I have wood

    rigidity.
