  • My current bike storage solution is to have an ugly pole in the hallway of our flat. It's pretty utilitarian and only has one function:

A friend of mine is a carpenter and he's made a bike shelf for me already:

And so I asked him to make me something a little more complicated:

  • He used some lovely pieces of solid walnut:

  • It took about two weeks to create:

But it was completed last week:

  • I picked it up from his on Saturday and will be installing it at the weekend....

  • Nice, but that can only hold one bike right? And is 22cm enough for the bars to fit in without the wheel being skewiff and blocking the hall?

Heh... you're posting as you're going along... OK... is it done? Have you mounted it?

I've only offered it up to the wall so far but it fits perfectly.

He's also made me a second, simpler unit for the other bike:

  • The big unit is 13.9Kg and is being hung on plasterboard... I have 6 of these badboys:

Each rated at 40Kg to make sure it's nice and secure.

  • Centre of bike to back wall looks like 240mm to me; presumably taking into account user's preferred bar width. Looks spot-on. Good work!

Correct. Bars are 42cm so there's a little wiggle room for levers etc

  • Finally, to make sure my bikes don't get scratched, i've bought some self adhesive neoprene sponge strip to stick on the cutouts:

  • Ooh, very nice!

( the wooden storage unit, not the neoprene strips )

  • The transformation is complete:

  • They look great, nice work!

  • Awesome! Great stuff, really lovely wood. No euph.

  • Cheers both. I'm pretty chuffed with it.

It looks great but also tidies up lots of the bike paraphernalia too.

The wood is incredible quality. So much better than some veneer I would have got from buying an "off the shelf" solution.

  • Beautiful. He could probably make a living selling these to LFGSS.

  • really nice and the choice of walnut wood luurvly!

  • Amazing. Making one this week.

  • They look great

  • I might knock the garage down now, make/buy some of these and move my bikes to the hall.

Cool. Post some pics of how it goes.

I've had a couple of pm's asking if my friend would consider making more. I'm afraid that it's very unlikely... He spent nearly a month of lunchtimes etc perfecting this one and, even though I only paid for materials and a couple of pints, it was getting on for £400 for both.

I've posted my measurements etc so that people can either make them themselves or get their local friendly carpenter to help them out.

Happy to answer any other questions though...

  • I'll be making my own version out of that king of materials- 18mm plywood.

Yes, I am significantly cheaper than Soul.

  • Ha! That will definitely be cheaper than 20mm walnut...

Might be worth thinking about which way round you want hang the bike... Because of the seatpost / saddle, mine will only fit on with the drive side facing the hallway. I guess if I was going to make it again, I might make the right hand side of it slightly longer to accommodate it both ways. Then again, I might change bike tomorrow and have a much more compact frame which would bugger it anyway.

  • Excellent work.

Are the Swiss allen keys attached with a magnetic holder?
