Probably see you guys at the end if you're going to grab a quick drink or 3 somewhere. Going to be down there for the weekend anyway.

Note to anyone riding brakeless:
Watch our for the corner on hilltop lane, it comes out of nowhere on a narrow lane so you don't have much time to slow down. -

Wait M80 who are you IRL?

Potentially in for first forum ride , is brakelss ok for this ? and 80gi too high?
i'm sure there are plenty who can, but most people on this forum cannot ride up ditchling on 80gi.
are you a particularly strong climber? and on the other hand, so what if you have to walk?this will be a great introduction to forum rides, a tried and trusted route and the list is littered with people who are a pleasure to ride with. i've invited a friend who's not on here, and if he does come i'm sure he'll join the forum that day.

I am sure YAL will confirm, but that is a big gear to be trying to push up Turners and Ditchling, and you really will need brakes on the desents.
These are open roads, with plenty of debris from the wind and rain, and no one wants a trip to A&E due to some collateral damage.

As above, only you can answer this question, but I would probably go further than Bernie and say no. (Obviously its up to YAL as its his ride). The weather is likely to be shit, and the only other long ride I've done with brakeless people, was in the spring, with much better conditions.
The first decent hill we came to one flipped over his bars going into a ditch, and the other guy slid out and down the road for a couple of meters. Further-more, due to being on a track-gearing he got the train back after half the distance because he was seriously slowing the whole ride. The first guy had to rotate his drops upside down because of how much his back hurt.
I have no idea about your ability, and this isn't in anyway a judgment, more just a statement of fact that it is not the ride for 80gi brakeless

No good for brakeless at all? I'm only on about 71gi and very happy descending hills brakeless.
If the weather is very wet, like the past week or ice/snow etc I'll probably give it a miss anyway. Has anyone here done this route brakeless?
-
• #68
I wouldn't ride breakless, generally, so I might be being pessimistic (and removed the or from my post above). As bruce said, its about control, which should be a lot easier at 70gi than 80gi, if you're confident you can do it then who am I to tell you not to - just that 80gi sounds too much.
I believe Indra did it breakless in the summer with a load of other HHSB peeps -
• #69
Pretty much what Branwen and Bernie said. And it's especially not recommended if it's wet. And yeah 80gi is sort of silly for this ride - nobody wants to be Dr. Wacky Races or Mr. Wiped at 37 Miles In.
But if brakeless peeps are going to come I'd ask that you ride with extra caution (ie space) around others and definitely to descend at the back of the group. If even half the list shows up it will be a large ride so people need to ride accordingly.

I've done this 5 or more times brakeless both in wet and dry, around 70gi and it was fine for me, that said I don't want to say you'll be fine because then if feel bad if you got hurt.
As others have said only you can tell if you're up to it.I'm sure there will be other brakeless riders.

out I think. a week of cold means I'm out of breath just going upstairs :/

Would like to do this but only have gears...
You know how well you can climb hills or not. Brakless down some of those hills requires control.
