Doing this on the Ridley made me realise that fixed isn't the best way to do cover distance.

I saw the Look for sale and bought it (thanks BigBen).

Right off, it's too small. But I'm not too fussed. It's a 58.5cm top tube - the same as the Ridely - so I sort of know I won't be too cramped.
The fork is a no-name threadless 1". BigBen was selling it with. I bought it at the time as it I thought "it's got lots of steerer". I'm glad I did as it helped make the threaded vs threadless decision.
Next call was the groupset. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to anything geared. I wanted to keep it European, so decided Campag. I wanted Record.
First was the crankset. Originally I wanted square taper carbon, but having a matching set would have pushed the build cost too high. So alloy Record it was.

The forum served up a pair of mint 172.5 cranks (short for my height apparently, but what I run on both my other bikes) and matching brakeset. It had begun...

  • Is this planned for lighter rides?
Will a lugged/bonded carbon frame be okay with all that weight in the saddlebag?

Should be ace though, really want one of these frames one day

  • i don't plan on doing any bikepacking on it... but i have no idea if it would!

hopefully! the seat cluster is my favourite.

a couple friends had said that the new shape ergo hoods were much better than the old ones, so i picked up a pair of mint centaur 10 speeds of ebay.

the shifters aren't not record or alloy... which bothers me slightly, as i like things to match. however with the fork being carbon i thought i'll just go for a carbon front end. found this 130 stem on US ebay. luckily i have someone going to america for christmas, so have saved £25 in shipping.

the clamp on the stem is 26. i spotted a pair of deda piega for cheap on rible, so bought the bar. however i was seduced by a pair of compact anatomical easton ec90 equipe carbon bars on ebay. it was probably the least sensible purchase, but i figure without shipping to pay i could probably get my money back selling on. they're practically the exact same reach and drop as the piega which feel good (although i haven't ridden on them) and were designed to shape well with the ergo shifters. i will have them with the stem after christmas.

    dtm.

  • looking good!

  • old looks use 25.0 seat posts. while i would have LOVED this, i'm going to be needing a lot more post than that. i think this thomson will have enough to it. it does according to the sums, but i'm not sure i'd want to take it right to the minimum insertion. i've ordered the seatpin/clamp, so will soo find out.

if it doesn't i'm stuck with a vavert, or similar. a problem is setback with that much post at a slack angle. so i really do hope the thomson fits...

  • so i picked up a pair of mint centaur 10 speeds of ebay.

what did you pay for them? looking out albeit sheepishly for a pair of those..

  • £120 with cables delivered. i could have had used/chipped record at that price but apparently the new shape in record are all 11 speed. the shifter decision was pretty much made for me, which i'm thankful for.

picked up the bottom bracket (centaur), cassette (veloce 13-27) and chain (record) today from yodasm9. the rear mech too... stupidly i didn't check over PM if it was short cage. it's long. annoying as alloy centaur 10 speed is hard to find. so back in the market for a rear mech.

  • Looking interesting! Looking forward to seeing more.

    :)

  • nice! yours?

  • yes, i'll take the direct link away so that you can focus of the glory that will be yorn!

black carbon front end will look classy

  • Nice, looking forward to this. I'm building up one of these frames myself, do prefer the CA paintjob though.

  • ^^ rep for not stealing no thunder. put the link back though!

^ nice! start a thread - would be good to have the two together! dunno what it is about the CA paint job i like so much.

  • bc, I'd put yellow stripe Michelins on the crabon rims, yellow saddle and bar tape, all other components black

    noiser, bc, kg231 meet up?

  • If you are struggling for a seatpost the bbb skyscraper comes in a massive range of diameters and lengths and inline - don't look too bad (clamp isn't the prettiest) and I don't think the weight is too bad if memory serves. Only ~£20.

  • mos def. i should be finished with it after christmas.

bought mavic krysium SLs off BikeRadar. i spent 50% more than i budgeted for but was told they were worth it. they're french too which satisfies a compulsive side.

what are opinions on tyres with coloured sidewalls? i am not a huge fan of black rims/ silver braking surfaces/ black sidewalls, nor brightly coloured sidewalls.
though, would white sit well against the braking surface? would red work well with the graphics?

  • thanks for that, with zero setback it's a better option than the vavert .

  • I'd go for gumwalls, looks very pro too.

  • gumwall!

  • any fast ones?

actully google-ing it i'm not feeling gumwalls.
coloured sidewalls may be a bit much, reckon black is best.

  • gumwall, eurgh, time a place

    ultremos/michelins in black/white, black/red, etc.

  • going to veto black red. find me a picture of a bike that looks good with red tyres.

  • any fast ones?

Vittoria Open Corsa Evo SC clinchers fast enough?
    I like gumwalls.

  • tbh, any tyre with some added colour rubber is effin' gash. for me its either black or gumwall, no others. and then let the frame stand out for itself instead of "accentuating" it with a matchy colour in the tyres.. EURGH
