  • progress at last.. machined some parts in college, im quite please as they are within a reasonable tolerance and should build a straight jig. still need about the same again of machined parts and then some extruded alumium.

  • i also finished building a balance bike for my daughter, it now also has bartape and a bell.

  • bar stem combo

  • Wow! Bravo!

  • merci

  • nice one jim
    love the balance bike

  • Nice one! Love a fillet-brazed balance bike. Not for me obviously. I'm too tall.

  • Where did you source the wheels for he balance bike? When I finally get round to starting welding (need to clear some garage space) I plan to make a couple of balance bikes but sourcing wheels seems to be difficult.

  • Got them on ebay from some company in germany they weren't cheap at about £40 without tyres or tubes.

  • Progress

  • Great read, jimjam. Will be keeping an eye on this. Wold love to build a frame on my own one day.

Take the wheels off this, and some extras.
I live in Brighton so if you win it I can pick it up for you and bring it to london (I work in central)

EDIT: There's no need for me to be so kind. There's dirt cheap kids bike on ebay based in london. Good idea though and you can use the chains, bars, and seatposts.

  • just finished it. well almost still need to check alingment fully and build a rotating mount for it. i will upload some better photos when i get a chance. guess i need to build some frames.

  • Great stuff. jealous of your surface table!

access to back of tubes ok?

  • access is fine, tubes sit 140mm from the main beam. jig will be solely used for tacking frame prior to welding/brazing in a workstand. the fact it will rotate also gives lots of options when it comes to access.

  • some close ups, there was a ton of machining involved but im really happy the way its turned out.

  • Ah yes, can see now!

    Looks brilliant.

  • Lovely, well done.

  • i don't know what they are made of on "OTP" jigs, but when i had alloy cones to support the tubes they sucked all the heat from the torch making brazing impossible.. couldn't heat the surface properly

  • hma i hope thats not the case here, my lathe will take forever to make them in stainless
